The Many Faces Of Water Damage

Water is probably the most potent destroyer when it comes to homes

, and restoring a home from water damage takes seasoned and certified professionals. There are basically three categories of water damage that can cause damage to a home.

Clean water is the first category of water content, wherein the potable water that comes from the main water supply of a home or office has found a way out of its usual path. When there is a leak in the pipeline, or an appliance malfunctions while it is attached to a water source, these are the causes of water damage that can be quickly contained, and cause minimal damage to a home.

Clean water flooding is minimal for health risks, but this may be quite damaging to wood as the dampness can be absorbed to slowly cause rotting from within the wood grain. Laminate in plywood can peel shortly after a flooding incident, so these may need replacement soon after the event. Water spots may also be noticed but ignored, and these can cause dampness that encourages mold to grow, which in turn can gradually lead to health risks for those with allergies.

Water that can cause significant risks in health for humans is known as grey water that has biological bacteria, or physical microorganisms that are a potential health threat. Chemicals in water are also a great risk factor, and this type of damage is usually caused by failure of pumping systems or drainage systems from the regular toilet utilities - resulting in flooding as the water flows back out from the drainage tank. Other types of drain failures can be seen in back flow coming from washing machines and dishwasher units.

Many insurance policies do not cover water damage from sump pump failures; however this can be amended by an added clause in the policy which usually results in added cost to the monthly premiums. The clause added usually specifies coverage for damages caused by sewer and drain failures.

Black water, the third and most hazardous category, consists of water that comes from sewage systems, seawater, flood water, and all types of mixed water that contains physical waste and bacteria that could make occupants of a household very sick. When natural calamities strike, or when sewage systems overflow, this type of damage is very hazardous and takes professionals to clean up the damage from these sources.

Category three or black water can also be a classification given to water that has been left to stagnate in a certain area for more than seventy two hours - causing more damage than originally anticipated. This category is given regardless of color of the water or any visible content, since it may have already developed potentially harmful organisms by being stagnant.

Health hazards do not necessarily show themselves during the time of water presence, and in fact these health issues may occur long after the damage has been done and already cleared. The dampness left behind by water is conducive to the growth of mold which may cause nasal allergies as well as airborne diseases, especially if they are left to grow inside vents. It is best to find professionals to remove mold and trace areas wherein they may grow in order to eliminate the problem while it is still in its early stages.

Restoration of property is usually taken care of by professionals who specialize in restoration for damages caused by fire or water, and these professionals are able to work quite speedily as they are fully equipped with the proper tools. The cost, however, may depend on the extent of the damage to the area, as they may also need to repair portions of property that are already severely affected.
