The Many Faces Of Your Golf Trainer

When you look at your golf trainer, what do you see

? Do you see an ex professional who has now devoted his or her time to training promising young golfers? Or do you see a qualified sports psychologist able to take you to the mental level you need to focus and achieve? How about a qualified nutritionist or strength conditioning trainer? Or maybe a dedicated putting trainer?

The right answer of course is that your golf trainer should be all of these and a few more besides. If she or he isnt, you probably need more than one golf trainer. Depending on the level you play at and the level you wish to achieve, there are dozens of potential skill sets and behaviours you need to master.

To better understand the role of the golf trainer, it is perhaps easiest just to look at the multiple skillsets required of even an average golfer. Lets start with the basics.

Golf is a game involving multiple instruments, which must be wielded with varying degrees of force. During the time in which the club is swung, the golfer must perform complex mathematical calculations in his or her head, whilst never lose sight of the fact that he or she is in direct competition with the people she or he is playing against.

A golfer (as any good golf trainer will tell you) is also required to be aware of wind direction, wind speed, sudden shifts in the direction and/or speed of the wind, and elevation. So youre talking at the very least about an ability to comprehensively map your surrounding environment in three dimensions while still concentrating on the maths and physics of swinging a club to hit a very small ball in exactly the right place.

And that was just a rundown of the basics. No wonder the average golf trainer should be a man or woman of many skills and talents.

When you think that whole books have been devoted just to the art of getting your swing right, you start to understand just how complex a game of golf really is. There are even some interesting techniques like wearing a top hat to correct your head position, or driving off in a dinner suit to restrict the shoulders properly they all indicate something quite common - that most golfers never stop trying to learn and improve.

So the golf trainer is there to help. And with every step along the path to golfing perfection he or she is pulling in all sorts of different skillsets to help you improve. Part of learning to be a better driver, for instance, is strength training and learning about sports nutrition. You cant maintain that power without the right food.

So next time you see your golf trainer coming down the fairway, spare a thought for the true depth of her or his expertise!
