The Marine Aquarium Is A Piece Of The Ocean
The fish only tank is the simplest of the three types of aquarium and it is recommended for the beginning saltwater aquarium enthusiast
. This set up can also serve as the starting point for future expansion into more complex marine aquarium arrangements.
The fish only with live rock marine tanks includes fish with assorted invertebrates, like abalones and starfish and the addition of live rock. Live rock is broken pieces of natural coral reef structure which has living organisms on its surface and within the rock, including crabs, worms, bacteria, algae and small crustaceans. Live rock is extremely porous and used by many enthusiasts as a biological filter in their marine tanks.
Reef tanks can be one of the simplest tanks to set up, but require more light in the right spectrum for corals and invertebrates. In the past, it was assumed that maintaining a reef tank required a huge marine aquarium, but recently, smaller set ups have become more popular, proving that keeping a marine tank doesn't have to be an expensive endeavor.
Once the type of tank has been decided, the new hobbyist needs to do lots of research. There are hundreds of publications to choose from on subjects ranging from the basics of tank set up to the types of fish or corals you want to include. Online forums are another resource to consider, especially if you have questions regarding getting started in saltwater aquariums. There you can find experts with experience on every level from novice to professional, eager to share their knowledge.
A common mistake made by first time saltwater tank hobbyists is the purchase of a small, starter tank. When setting up a new aquarium; larger tanks are more expensive, but more forgiving of beginner mistakes. Maintaining the required pH balance, salt levels and aeration is easier with a larger aquarium which has a bigger water surface area.
If you purchased a nano aquarium tank, you would only be able to place one or two very small fish, depending how small the nano tank is, for example; if we are talking of a two or three gallon nano aquarium tank, you cannot put more than one fish. The frequency of partial water changes in a small nano tank will be higher, but it will be easier due to the small amount of water involved in the task.
Other frequent novice mistakes to keep in mind are: over feeding, over loading the system by adding too many fish, inadequate filtration, over medication and placing incompatible species together.
