The Media Player For All Of Your Needs

. The VLC media player is a great all-around program for handling just about any kind of media file you have on your computer. It can in almost all cases take over for Qucktime, Windows Media Player, and the like because it can play files in just about any format you give it. And it runs on whatever operating system you use: Windows, Mac OS, or Linux.

Not only is it a universal media player, but it has the ability to take broken or corrupted files and attempt to repair them. In many cases it's successful, too! You can use it to record video clips, burn media onto DVDs, and much more. If you've ever been frustrated by trying to open a media file and being told that your media player can't use that particular file format, then you'll find this player to be invaluable.

Because VLC is free and open source, people who are into programming can actually acquire the source code so they can customize it even further. But most people will want to simply get the free download so they don't have to worry about file formats, codecs, and the like, but can just open up files and play them.

Though VLC isn't what anyone would call flashy or fancy, it's a real workhorse of a program and it has many features and allows a lot of customization. You could, for example, use part of a video as wallpaper on your computer. Just hit Control+P to get to the Preferences menu and under the "Video" choice, you choose DirectX Output. When you restart VLC, just select Enable Wallpaper Mode, and there you go.

Another popular use for the VLC Media Player is to play YouTube videos without having to use a browser. All you do is open the Media menu and choose "Open Network Stream" and then paste in the address of the YouTube video you want to watch. VLC will automatically play the highest-quality version available, allowing you to skip around, go to full screen, and even use multiple monitors.

To take clips from DVDs (or any other video source file), all you have to do is go to the View menu and select Advanced Controls. Then play the video back and hit "Record." It will make a recording of the current video in MP4 format, and place it in your Videos directory.

You can also download a portable version of the media player that only takes up 20MB of space, so you can take it with you on an external drive, and run it from there, because it doesn't require installation.

Versions of the VLC media player are available for the iPad, and a new version will be available for Android devices early in 2011. VLC is a versatile, easy-to-use free download that will rapidly become your "go to" media player since it has no trouble playing the widest range of file formats.
