The Most Famous Poker Hands
Over the years there have been a number of famous poker hands
. Some which have lasted the test of time. You are only going to remember an elite few, the rest are just going to be a blur. Here are some of the more well known ones.
Dead Man's Hand is the name which is given to someone who is holding two pair consisting of a pair of Aces and a pair of eights. It received the name as it is the hand Wild Bill Hickok was holding when he was killed back in 1876. There is some debate and conjecture as to the identity of the fifth card he was holding. Hickok was killed while playing poker and so his death receives even more mystique.
10-2 is known as the Doyle Brunson because this was the hand that Brunson was holding to win not just one but two World Series of Poker Main Event titles. He won in 1976 and then repeated a year later in 1977. In 1976, Brunson was up against Jesse Alto. Alto has A-J and looked when good when the flop came A-J-10. Things improved for Brunson when a 2 came on the turn to give him two pair and then a 10 arrived on the river to give him a full house.
In 1977, Brunson was heads-up with Bones Berland. Berland had 8-5 and was thrilled the see the flop of 10-8-5. Brunson still had top pair which became two pair when a 2 came on the turn. Needing an 8 or 5 to win, Berland didn't have the luck of Brunson, when not only he didn't get the card he needed but a 10 emerged. In two years in a row, Brunson received a runner-runner finish to get full houses.
7-3 is known as Joe Hachem for it is the hand that Hachem won the 2005 World Series of Poker title with. The flop came 6-5-4 to give him a straight. The turn brought an Ace which was ever better as his opponent was holding an Ace. He missed the river and Hachem made history. This made people think differently about 7-3 as it is one of the worst starting poker hands that you can have in Texas Hold-Em.
10-7 is known as the Daniel Negreanu as it is his favourite hand. As shown before with the other hands, when you have a medium hand and you hit the flop then you are in a great situation. Your opponent isn't going to put you on hitting a flop like that so will be confident in betting a lot. They won't think they are bluffing because they will be thinking that they have the best hand. This works even better when your opponent is holding a premium hand such as a pair of Aces.
A-4 is referred to as Stu Ungar as it is the hand that Ungar won the 1997 Main Event with. It was the third time Ungar won, after he claimed the title in 1980 and a year later in 1981. He was one of the best poker players until his life was tragically cut short. This is a nice way by which to remember him and his legacy.
