The Most Important Factor That Contributes To Your Guitar Technique Proficiency

On our quest to becoming faster and more accurate guitar players we always try different

approaches to building speed and accuracy for that matter.

There are many approaches to building the above mentioned but in my opinion the most effective on the long run are the guitar finger exercises.

What are guitar finger exercises ?

Guitar exercises are patterns that are designed to help you improve your finger strength, develop your finger independence, improve your finger stamina and last ultimately take your guitar technique to the next level.

They are the warm up that every pro athlete do in order to build their strength and endurance and become successful while practicing their favorite sport.

For example such an exercise is the well known chromatic scale. The chromatic scale is probably the first thing many guitar players first learn to apply to guitar playing when they first start.

Although you are probably bang your head right know saying something like: Yeah, I know what you mean, I remember how I started playing those 1,2,3,4 exercises across the fret board. But to be honest I dont practice those exercises anymore, that was a stage when id didnt knew to much about guitar playing, now I am practicing something way cooler and that I hope it will help me take my technique to the next level .

The chromatic scale can be a very boring thing to practice for the simple fact that it sounds dull.

Unfortunately, the most effective guitar finger exercises are usually the ones that dont necessarily sound good. And that is perfectly normal !

Why is normal that guitar finger exercises dont sound cool ?

Guitar finger exercises dont sound cool for the simple fact that they are designed for other purposes then making music out of them.

Their main purpose is to help you train the aspects I talked about in the beginning of the article.

Their purpose is to help you make some particular finger moves so that you use you finger to different moving motions that you will probably use when making your own music.

Now you probably understand the purpose of guitar finger exercises, but what is the correct way to approach them in order to make the most out of them ?

The correct way to approach guitar finger exercises is the following:

1. Stick to maximum 2 guitar finger exercises and exercises them daily.

2. It is best to practice them for 15 30 minutes before you start doing your routine practice

3. Use a metronome. The metronome helps you keep a steady beat as well as it helps you measure your speed progress

4. Start with a slow tempo where you can play those exercises relaxed and accurate. Accuracy comes from a good synchronization of your hands. In order to be accurate at high speeds you have to be accurate at slow speeds.

Start slow and gradually increase your speed as you progress.

5. Be disciplined. After choosing the guitar finger exercises you want to practice start doing them daily for at least a month. Changing the exercises you practice each day wont help you make any significant progress in terms of speed.
