The tale of the knights Templar is encircled by intrigue and secrecy

. After their founding during the First Crusade they quickly rose to unequalled power. They began to lose their grip on power one night in 1307 when the king of France effectively commanded a coordinated and complete eradication of the order. Those who had ordered their extermination, following charges of depravity and heresy, thought that was their end. But were they destroyed? Many now think they have secretly survived in some form to this day.

The knights Templar have been associated with numerous aspects of western mythology, particularly in the last three centuries. The secret nature of the Order of knights known as the Knights Templar has led to many feeling they can justifiably connect the organisation with any and all areas of the occult and other mysterious happenings and events. A few of the more famous historical enigmas that are repeatedly thrown into this mix are the Turin Shroud, the Holy Grail and the Ark of the Covenant, all of which are said to have links back to the Knights Templar.

The belief that the Order or the knights Templar lived on after its attempted destruction is not one held by the majority of historians. In many examples historians are in fact correct to assert that the Order held no further part. Historians are right to find reasons to object to most of the claims concerning the Knights Templar with a lot of the contemporary claims about the Order being wholly unfounded in fact, even if plausible.

The gaps in world history are many and so are the gaps in the history of the knights Templar, leaving it relatively tempting for many to mistakenly place the Order in an event or situation with which they actually had no connection. They themselves had an obsession with secrecy making it very difficult for historians to place all of the pieces of the puzzle together. This is why it is very easy for many people to imagine they had secret plans and ventures.
