The Mystical Hills and Psalm 121
Psalm 121 reads as follows from the King James version of the Bible:
1 I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
2 My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
8 The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
This psalm depicts the individual sojourner, who was perhaps alone orperhaps with others looking accross the depths of the landscape and beyond tothat point out there where help can arise and come forth, erstwhile reaching ahead and forward into the depths of their own individual need for help.
This psalm in particular points to the one one one relationship with the Lord in calling for help as an individual. This call for help can be for oneself or for others.
The idea depicted at first might be that this is imaging that somewhere in the distance, as far as you can see, there will still be the means and help available from the Lord coming closer and closer and finally to fruition. You could picture someone on a deserted island, hoping to be rescued back to the mainstream and finally help arrives from the distance somehow and someway. A popular TV show called Gilligan's island was based on the concept as was the movie Castaway with Tom Hanks.
And those is need of help sometimes feel like the island castaway that has no available means of getting back. While this is part of the meaning presented in this psalm, the reality is that these hills specified in this psalm refers to " spiritual places" that are an unseen reality where angels tread yet nearby even on the plains of the great deserts such as on the sands of the Sahara.
The mystical hills are not a metaphor or representation but a living reality associated with the realms of angels. Those that are in need of help are living with the problem, living with the difficulty. When asking for help, someone can say, I am living with this problem and I need help with it. This way the reality of the truth is confronted that this is not something in the background but right up front and present in that I am or they are living with this.
So for example in asking for help for others, someone might ask that help be given to those living with confusion, living with addictions, living with this particular health problem and so on.
The particularsojournerin this psalm may have been living with immediate threats of danger for which he needed the help of the Lord, he was indeed at risk at the least from the elements.
The hills are there but unseen in their source, like the idea of hidden manna spoken of in the book of Revelation.
Revelation Chapter 2 verse 17 says, "He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To him who overcomes, I will give some of the hidden manna. I will also give him a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to him who receives it.
They are some things we can't see unless they are briefly revealed but these mystical hills actually exist and are nearby and possibly could be considered part of the hidden manna that is available for believers today.
Yet this is the real starting point of help that is coming our way and is pointed to us and we can understand that these hills are part of the spiritual truths we are indeed dealing with, truths that are at first hidden and then revealed even as manna is at first hidden and then revealed.
The example might be if someone was asking for help, on the deck of an air craft carrier, those great gigantic ships that are none the less are still subject to the vagaries of the great but uncertain oceans, treading on the open seas which involve no land base and no hills that can be seen by the naked eye, they can still call upon for help from the mystical hills, places were there are mystical streams flowing upon these hills and the presence of angels who have the personal knowledge and the ability to intervene upon the areas of help involved for one person and even if it is only one person..
The hills also exist here on these open seas even in nearing the presence giant ships, that have no basis to speak of hills that can be seen. These hills are operating on another plain of reality that oversees presiding realities and reach into the realities of wherever you might be and fro whenever you might call for the help, these unseen hills are not far away.
This is not a place of chaos but ofsereneness, provision, prosperity,a place of power, influence and deep personal care that goes forward into the realities of the moment and the nearby future for those who look to these hills for help
The meaning of help in the context of the Scriptures is also contextual to the benefits of the Lord and there is a close relationship to the ongoing benefits of being in relation to the Lord and the ongoing help that correlates with these benefits and in many instances they can be considered one and the same. One might ask for benefits and it would be one in the same as asking for help.
Isaiah 30 verse 5 says, "They were all ashamed of a people who could notbenefit them, Or be help orbenefit, But a shame and also a reproach."
This verse from Isaiah clearly gives the idea that help is also a benefit.
The imaging within this psalm is one of the Lord protecting the individual freedom of the person and giving and preserving the opportunity to always freely come back to him in trust, in prayer and in the loving relationship with the Lord as each approach to the Lord in prayer and in the seeking of help is a coming back or turning back..
In human terms, what we see and experience ourselves we might tend to put on the outside of hoping for help and assistance from the world of say angels.
But just because we get weary, fall asleep and can't see that much in the darkness doesn't mean that those who are helping us are in that same view of things.
If we are on the open seas, and on say the aircraft carrier as mentioned previously, there could be the usual dangers of being in what could be uncertain and powerful currents, brewing storms, in some eras elements of warfare and so on although not all that much represents sheer danger for a ship that SIZE in most waters.
Yet the angels and the assistance or help from above is not subject to the dangers of the seas and the mystical hills are not in the same state of affairs as the seafarers are in the surrounding seas are.
And this principle needs to be understood in that those helping us, and the help coming from the Lord is not from a plain where there is matching challenges to what we might be facing.
The assistance is coming from a separate realm that is different from the realm you are experiencing.
You might be sleeping on the job, but the assistance that pervades from the spiritual realms is not.
You might be subject to the darkness of night, but the assisting angels see perfectly clearly through the darkness and the thick fog of mounting personal and national problems and deeply entangled problems all over the place..
There is a creationist theme to the help and benefits of the Lord, the creator of the all things, who has also created realms of ongoing help pointed to the individual person that arise from the " hills". not a phantom place of fiction and fictionalized hopes for help but a real place where we can look for real help and indeed the best help..
The mystical hills can be specifically sought, cited and addressed within prayer requests, no matter what your location, just as a request for angels can be specified.
Massive elements are involved in the protection and help, such as the mighty sun, which is a life giving force but can bring about strong rays and conditions of heat for the traveler. And while help is needed in dealing with the sun, it is also a benefit, yet the angels realize that the sun is real, even as are problems are real and there needs to be care in dealing with the sun in proper fashion as with many other smaller areas of our lives..
The help goes to the nth degree, in that there are no forces on the earth that match the power and presence of the sun itself yet the Lord will even protect the psalmist from excessively strong rays of the sun, and all the help mentioned in this psalm goes far yonder from anything we can conjure upstrictlyon our own without looking to the Lord for his help..
This is practical but also symbolic in that the Lord will offer assistance with all that is in the creative and created realm included with the individual's relationship with the presence of the mighty sun itself, as a force that realistically cannot be contended with no matter what.
If the sun was suddenly closer to the earth in only the amount of a couple of million miles, it could reek havoc that would not be contestable by any modern means.
That the sun is so precisely located in its distance from the earth, is a big deal, in terms of survivability and we depend on the Lord to do this for us precisely.
The precise aspects of the day, and its apportionment into the night and the sun and its positioning in relationship to the earth and the individual on it who heeds help within this psalm, points to the precise nature of the Lord's help, even within gigantic contexts.
The view is that the Lord may also bring in this precision to any possible problem, issue and divide for which you are looking for help.
The Lord is also preserving the freedom of the psalmist to travel, but more importantly the freedom and ability to love and to be in relationship with him freely and without impediments or harm to the relationship and the help will be of an enduring even never ending nature but alsooccurringwith the relationship itself, as the psalmist looks to the hills for the help indicating relationship.
The Lord is with the help also the keeper of the soul, to never ending glory and salvation.
If you are meeting someone later in the day, you want them to go about their business in a free manner but you also want them to be free from any impediments to arriving in your presence and meeting you as planned. You want their pathway to you preserved.
In the same way the Lord will help in preserving the pathway for you towards while also keeping your freedom intact even as he affords this help and protection
The psalmist indeed could have been prevented from even looking to the hills for help or traveling freely in the first place, but the Lord preserves this possibility and the freedom of the psalmist to both look for this help, call for this help and also find this help. This looking to the hills is anexercisein freedom and the psalmist could be in a sense stubborn and not so this.
The angels, operating upon the mystical hills are all about preserving and helping the faithful on their journey forward.
The expectation is that the sojourner depicted in this psalm will have affairs that involve some treachery, danger, situations that bubble up with degrees of uncertainty and dealings with inherently powerful elements for which greater assistance is needed than just what is available and known in the natural realms that are seen by the sojourner.
While in many ways in this present era there are advancing technologies that do seem to represent greater means and there are maybe better means today in some realms through the graces of the Lord, travel still carries danger and all possible pathways an individual can come up with still carry the need for help that goes beyond what can be conjured up from your own abilities and native powers or from what presented from modern widely available means.
While the sojourner might not be able to always match means with the circumstances alone and succeed, help is available beyond what is previously known and understood through what only meets the eye. But looking to the mystical hills, the psalmist is looking for more than what meets the eye and finding more than what meets the eye.
This psalm and its meaning has full application in modern times, even though the technology and thoroughfares have certainly changed and arguably have progressed and therefore there needs to still be a keen attunement and awareness and calling upon the help of the Lord now and always, no matter what attainment is otherwise reached, the help and benefits of the Lord and his angels working for him on our behalf are unsurpassable and the mystical hills of help are still there and we can and should look for the help on yonder.
