The Need For A Clear Health And Safety Policy
We find that there is a need to industrialize our society
, and it is one that has been around since the dawn of the industrial age. All over the industrial complexes on Earth we find that workshops and factories are prevalent among them. For governments, healthy and safety issues have become a strong area of focus. But these concerns of health and safety go beyond the limits of both workshop and factory. They also include areas such as agricultural work, garages, restaurants, schools and even research centers. Because of this, we find there is a need for a policy directed at the safety and healthy working environment for everyone and to help reduce the incidents of illness and injury that happen at the workplace.
These concerns of safety/health are not restricted to industrial areas alone. Every job and opportunity is influenced. This includes educational institutions, eateries, medical complexes, automotive repair shops, fabrication centers, and farms, to name a few. This has created a requirement for the institution of comprehensive policies so the working atmosphere is safe overall, work related sicknesses are reduced and injuries or accidents are eliminated.
Employees are exposed to many hazards in the course of executing their duties and responsibilities. These include excessive noise, which has an effect on their hearing; exposure to hazardous materials, many of which cause cancer related illnesses. Slippery floors pose a danger to employees who may slip and injure themselves.
To reduce the incidence of work place injury and promote safety and well-being of the employee, a sound health and safety policy should have both an implementation and a monitoring mechanism. To this end, the government through the appropriate labor office must ensure that employers comply with the provisions of the prevailing labor laws and regulations. Employers need to introduce efficient Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) programs that are in tandem with the labor office regulations.
Companies have a requirement to implement and maintain Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) policies that mesh with federal labor laws. To assure that labor regulations are complied with, the employer has to delegate staff members that have a working knowledge of OSH policy and are able to effectively manage the programs and assure OSH policy is met at every turn. Training is also extremely necessary for the work force on OSH policy and regulation.
The training provided for the health/safety policies needs to be focused and centric. For instance, periodic fire alarm drills to ensure all the workers know what to expect if a fire were to occur. The trainer should also instruct employees in the use of any equipment that will assure their safety in an emergency. In the construction business, for instance, this would include hard hats. In health care settings or chemical plants, gloves are essential and workers need to know exactly why.Gas masks are required for workers in areas where odors and dangerous fumes are an issue.
Workers will need to know first aid basics as well. As the first contact for an injury, first aid might be vital to saving a life or possibly even a limb. Just as vital to the safety policies is the practice of reporting to your labor officials the progress of training on an ongoing basis. The federal labor office has to know that companies are in 100% compliance with OSH rules and standards. This helps to deter violations and laxness in the programs. It keeps companies in compliance.
All employers have a duty to make sure that they have a healthy and safety policy in place. It should create a healthy work environment and reduce the probability of illness and/or injury.
