Lanzarote is the most easterly, and fourth largest of the Canary Islands and lies just 79 miles off the African coast and as with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is of volcanic origin and has an almost lunar like landscape in many areas. This fascinating island has a wonderful year round climate with temperatures often topping 29 during summer and hardly dropping below 21 during winter, making holidays to Lanzarote the perfect winter destination. One of the most fascinating sights on the island and a must see on all holidays to Lanzarote is the Atlantida Tunnel. Thought to be the longest volcanic tunnel in the world, it was formed over 3,000 years ago and was often used by locals to shelter from the pirates plundering their island. The tunnel is over 7km long, 1.6 of which is under the sea, but only 2km are open to the public. The caves are magically lit from within and the lowest part of the cave has fantastic acoustics so has been made into a very unique concert hall with astounding live performances. The Lanzarote born artist Cesar Manrique has had a huge input into the expansion of the tunnel whish also has a swimming pool, beautiful gardens and delightful restaurants, whilst still making sure the development stays in keeping with its volcanic surroundings. There is a stunning underwater salt lagoon, home to a species of blind albino crab, thought to be found nowhere else in the world. Timanfaya National Park is another excursion to put on your list whilst on holidays to Lanzarote. This is the site of one of the most violent and long lasting volcanic eruptions in the area; it took place back in 1730 and was so severe it turned the beautiful blue skies to a dark imposing black for six whole years. Youll be treated to fascinating displays of just how hot the land is here (between 400 and 600 degrees) as dry brush is thrown into a hole and immediately bursts into flames, or water is cast into a pit and is returned almost instantly as steam. You are not allowed to wander freely around the park due to the hazardous sulphur that still emits from many crevices, however there is an enthralling coach trip included in the entrance price which takes you on a journey through a landscape that is closer to the surface of the moon than that of the earth, or try a guided camel ride at a small extra charge. Cesar Manrique did not only put time and effort into the Atlantida Tunnel though, he has had a huge impact on the way we see holidays to Lanzarote today. He has campaigned tirelessly to minimise the environmental impact that growing tourism has on the island and has succeeded in ensuring there are very few high rise buildings on the island and that buildings are kept to traditional builds. You will also never see ugly billboard advertising blotting the picturesque landscape of this amazing island. Of course it is fascinating and interesting to see as much of the island as you can whilst on holidays to Lanzarote, but theres plenty of fantastic beaches when its time for some rest and relaxation, non better perhaps than the gorgeous Papagayo Beach on the southern tip, benefitting from fine sands and one of the best climates in the Canary Islands. The appealing year round climate and the fascinating landscape, history and tradition of this island will make sure that
holidays to Lanzarote will remain popular year after year.About the Author:
