The Nitty - Gritty Of Root Canal Dental Treatment
Human dental curative and restorative procedures are of various kinds
. There are cosmetic dental treatments for enhancement of one's facial features and there are corrective treatments like the root canal treatment that fixes the pulp of the teeth. The space between the roots of a tooth is known as the root canal. The root canal procedure includes a close inspection and treatment of the inner part of the tooth. This part of the tooth contains pulp tissue or the nerve. Along with pulp tissue, it also includes arteries, veins, lymph vessels and connective tissue.
The need for root canal treatment arises when the teeth are exposed to a large extent of pressure, temperature, decay, cracking or severe insult by way of faulty eating habits. The symptoms include -
1.Painful registration of hot and cold foods
2.Constant throbbing of the tooth
3.Dull, consistent pain
4.Regressed pain while chewing
The procedure -
During the root canal procedure, the tooth is first injected with anesthesia, to nullify the pain. After making an opening in the tooth, any decay or filling is cleared off. With the help of tiny, flexible files, the unwanted nerve tissue is removed. A very careful, steady and delicate up-and-down motion is made for cleaning and smoothening the canals to disinfect them and prepare them for filling. It is then sealed with an inert material that occupies the space vacated by the removal of the pulp.
The root canal treatment was the most dreaded of all dental treatments. People preferred extracting the tooth to saving it with root canal procedure. But as many have experienced, it is more a myth than a reality.
Some of the myths of root canal procedure are -
oA root canal treatment requires multiple sessions with the dentist - This is not true as modern technology and expertise requires only one visit to the dentist. A little precaution renders you to a normal dental routine soon after.
oOther illnesses follow a root canal procedure - This is more psychological than actual. The fear and anxiety catapulting to the procedure tenses one to lead up to a fever. But assurances from the dentist and a relaxed mental state negate this myth too.
oOnly if the tooth is hurting badly, then you need a root canal treatment - Pain is not the final symptom to determine whether you require the procedure or not. A tooth that has died may not produce any pain but needs to be treated to avoid infection. Only a dental examination can diagnose such a situation. So, it is necessary to get your teeth checked regularly.
oRoot canal treatment results don't last long - It is not true that the tooth breaks or cracks after a root canal procedure. Only if the coating done to the tooth after a root canal procedure is faulty, is a chance of tooth breakage. Root canal treatment per se is not responsible for it.
A timely visit to the dentist can help you reverse the situation and regain your tooth's strength with the root canal procedure.
