The Number One Goal You Should Have When Working A Puppet
The Number One Goal You Should Have When Working A Puppet
You also have to consider the interaction between the puppets and the audience and the message you want to convey. All these are important, but what is the number one goal you should have in mind every time you put on a puppet?
The answer is simple. Your number one goal whenever working a puppet should be to make that puppet look as lifelike as possible. You know you've reached that goal when someone comes up to you and says, "I forgot that they weren't real." I've heard that the reason most puppets come with three fingers is to give the audience a subtle reminder that they aren't real.
Why should this be the number one goal? Good question. When putting on a puppet program, the primary thing you want to communicate is your message and puppets are the tools you use to convey it to the audience. The more lifelike your puppets are, the more the audience will concentrate on your message. The less lifelike your puppet is, the more it can become a distraction and cause the audience to focus on it and not your message.
When you watch a movie or TV program with great actors what do you focus on, the actors or the story? You focus on the story and as a result enjoy the program. What if the acting is bad? Even if the program has a great story or content, the bad acting detracts from it and you probably will turn it off and won't recommend it to your friends. When performing a puppet program that's teaching timeless truths and principles, how much more important is it that the audience focuses on the message and not the puppets?
When striving to make your puppet as lifelike as possible, you'll automatically begin to focus on the other skills that are important. You will work to maintain proper height and positioning. You will focus on using proper lip sync, dropping the lower jaw, and not biting the words. You will seek to make effective use of arm and hand gestures. Your overall puppet performance will get better and better when you strive to keep that goal.
I'm not saying that you need to have great puppetry to convey your message, but it sure helps. If you set a goal to make your puppets as lifelike as possible and work to achieve it, you will increase the potential of your message reaching more people. That's important enough to make this your number one goal when working a puppet.
