The Object of your Focus The Story of your Life

Learning to direct our focus is learning how to direct our life. It's defining our reality and attracting what happens to us. The power to choose what we focus on might be one of the most precious gifts that we were given at birth but sadly it is one that is often ignored or seldom used.

Think of focus as a camera implanted in our brain from which we see the world. We can choose what that camera will focus on or let it wander randomly. The problem with that camera is that it has a distinct affinity for dramas.

It loves to focus on problems and on whatever is going wrong in the world. A car accident will be preferred over a beautiful sunset and a nagging boss will take precedence over a loving wife. That natural preference has to do with the survival instinct that kept man alive a million years ago. That instinct is still with us but is completely useless in today's world.

In prehistoric times, what was perceived as danger was real danger and most of the time life threatening. It is no longer the case today but the reflex is still with us. If our focus is left to wander by itself, chances are very high that it will be turned on something negative, depressing and of little value.

That is the reason that selective focus mastery is so important. Learning to control our focus is a habit that can be learned like any other habits. That is, it has to be integrated in the self-image. It has to be included in the fundamental beliefs that a person has about his identity.

When someone sees himself as a person who shuns the negatives and who's attracted to the positives, that's exactly what happens. When our focus turns to a negative subject, a filter automatically kicks in, blocks the input and turns the attention toward something of value.

What we habitually focus on becomes our reality, our Universe. It defines the boundaries of what is possible and what it not. Where we are today in life depends to a very large extend to what we focused on in the past.

A person who continually focuses on lacks and limitations cannot hope to find in his world the tools necessary to build a fortune. On the other hand, a person who sees prosperity, opportunities and resources everywhere has a very good chance of prospering.

There is nothing delusional about selective focus. It does not means that whatever directly affects us should be ignored. To the contrary. Selective or directed focus must pay special attention to what concerns us but it must be done in a spirit where the solutions to our problems are sought rather than wasting time and efforts fretting over the possible consequences that those problems may have.

William Shakespeare said in essence that the world is a stage, and it is. That stage is nothing but the object of our focus. By changing our focus we can change the stage and by changing the stage we change the color of the play that unfolds. That play is our life. By changing our focus we change our life. That's the miracle of selective and controlled focus.
