Scotland's optoelectronics industry is thriving and generates millions of pounds every year for the Scottish economy. With 90 companies ensuring a level of excellence is maintained throughout Scotland's practice within the optoelectronics field, between them employing over 4200 talented individuals, it's not difficult to see how Scotland remains at the forefront of the industry.

Optoelectronics, considered by many to be a sub-field of photonics, is the study and application of certain devices that can source, perceive and contain light - the word 'light' acting as a reference to both visible and invisible forms, including radiation forms such as infrared, x-ray, gamma rays and ultraviolet. The Scottish optoelectronics industry has a lot of hard work and dedication behind it, and has done since the early nineteenth century when it was first established in the country. Many Scottish universities are involved in intensive research into optoelectronics, including the Institute of Photonics, which is a partnership between the University of Strathclyde and the government, the Thin Film Centre, which focuses on the processes of deposition, design, fabrication and the characterisation of products relation to thin film, and the University of Abertay's EPI Centre, where research between disciplines is promoted in order to encompass the entire industry and its capabilities.

As well as the research institutions, there are also many companies focussed on putting that research into practice as well as plenty of opportunity for investors to make the most of Scotland's commercial optoelectronics strengths - which lie in communication, sensors and lasers and images.

The industry is showing no sign of slowing down and is continuing to grow, in spite of a poor economy.
