The Origin Of The Chronometer Watches – A Brief History

According to most historians, watches are the first mechanical devices to be invented by human beings

. One of the most popular desires of man, from the time of civilization, is to conquer time space. Though it took a bit of time to conquer the concept of space, man conquered time with the invention of a watch. This mechanical instrument has not been this perfect from the time it was first discovered. The innovations and the addition of various technologies by dedicated people has made this instrument what it is today!

So what are chronometer watches exactly? To be exact, a chronometer is a perfectly precise mechanical device. Though precision measurement is present in most watches, there is sometimes a bit of inaccuracy. As a matter of fact, most watches tend to lose a few seconds or more every day. This means, as time goes on you will notice that your watch is considerably behind time due to the cumulative effect. Though this is common in normal watches, the target of chronometer watches is to avoid this to the best possible extent. This is the reason why these are the most precise ones in the world of watches.

There are a lot of factors which influence the common watches to lose time. These factors are also responsible for the extent of which time is lost. Most of the watches are made of such materials that are influenced by temperature changes. Metals, especially, are prone to expand and contract with temperature changes thus affecting the delicate balance in a watch. Apart from just the temperature, there are a lot of other physical parameters that can affect the precision of watches. In chronometer watches care is taken to make sure that the affect of such elements is nil. This is why most chronometer watches don't lose that much times as common ones.

Thus, chronometers are certified watches. These are certified after being tested for their precision. During the 15 days of the testing process the watch is tested in all sorts of environment. Once it is proven that it loses not more than 4 seconds per day and gains not more than 6 seconds per day, it is certified as a chronometer!

The origins of the chronometer watches are with the marine world. In the 18th and 19th century, people on long voyages needed accurate time for measuring longitudes. Even a minor error in the calculation had the potential to set the ship ofcourse. With the fear of pirates and voyages that lasted even a couple of years, a small error in time had the potential to alter the course of the ship to such an extent that it landed many thousands of miles off course. So it was decided that there was an urgent need for the manufacture of a precision time measurement which lead to the invention of chronometer watches.

A competition was called for all over Europe for the invention of such precision watches. People were challenged and reward sums announced. Many a great brains came together to make the most accurate instrument for time measurement. And finally, in 1759 a carpenter was responsible for inventing the chronometer. It was tested and retested to conform that it lost less than 5 seconds. Thus, the chronometer was born!

But it wasn't until a long time afterwards that the thought of introducing precision into wrist watches was thought of. The first chronometer watch was manufactured and tested by Rolex. After the proper certification the first chronometer watch was presented to a famous personality. Now a million of chronometer watches are manufactured and sold all over the world per year!

When buying chronometer watches, you need to consider a lot of factors. The materials of usage, the model you want to choose, the company you go for, all determine how good your experience of shopping will be. In addition, you need to see what price ranges are suitable for you, which determine how you buy it. For the modern generation, these chronometer watches are also available online, which can be an advantageous and convenient means of purchase or instead you might approach certified vendors.
