The P11d Is Not The P9d

In the process of dealing with the HM Revenue and Customs

, a lot of people have the tendencies of confusing between the form P11D and the form P9D. It is however important to take note of the fact that also though the two forms may be having some features that cause people to see similarities in them, it is important to know that the two are not the same. In this article, we are going to look at the two forms, and we shall then determine which form should be used at particular moments.

The first thing that you need to take note of is the fact that both forms are used when one is trying to report to the HMRC about the benefits that you as an employee receive from the employer. These benefits are mainly in no-monetary form, but which have a monetary value. When you are notifying the HMRC, you will need to use the right form to notify them of the benefits, o as to ensure that you provide the information that is needed in the way that it is.

A Look At The First Form

Now, the P11D is the most common. This particular documents is only to be used in cases where the benefits are provided to the employee and they do exceed 8,500 pounds in a single year. It is however important to point out the fact that this amount should not in any way include the wages or the salaries that are earned as part of the intended income.

The 8,500 pound limit is determined on a pro-rata basis. For example, if someone earns 4,250 pounds or more within a six month period, that person will be required to pay taxes on this amount even if the total amount did not reach the 8,500 pound limit that is provided for by the HMRC.

A look At The Second Form

On the other hand, the P9D should be used when you as the employee earn less than 8,500 pounds in a single year. Normally, the form P9D is not used by directors. This is mainly because their benefits are usually more than the other one. However, you will find that there are cases where the directors are actually given the go-ahead to use these forms. This is possible in cases where certain conditions are met. For example, If the director earns less that 8,500 pounds in a year, case the director is a full time working director , and if he does not own more than 5% of the company's shares. All these conditions must be met for the director to be allowed to use the form p9D
