Playing a Blu Ray movie on a PS3 couldn't be any simpler. Simply insert the Blu Ray disc into the PS3 and the system will automatically turn on and begin playback of the movie. The PS3 will automatically adjust to the maximum resolution of your television, whether it's 720p or 1080p.

The picture quality of Blu Ray is phenomenal, and watching a Blu Ray disc on a Playstation 3 is no exception. A common misconception is that a Playstation 3 can't possibly offer the same level of picture quality as a standalone Blu Ray player. After all, a PS3 only costs around one hundred dollars more than a standalone player, and includes built-in wireless, a large hard disk, and (let's not forget) the most advanced gaming available on a console. The reality, however, is that the PS3 offers some of the finest quality Blu Ray playback available. In head-to-head comparisons, the video and audio quality of the PS3's Blu Ray functionality meet or exceed what you'll find on a stand-alone player.

After inserting a Blu Ray disc into your Playstation 3, you'll need to wait around 25 to 30 seconds for the movie to start up. This is slightly shorter than the average startup time of a stand-alone Blu Ray movie player.

Controls

By default, you'll be using the PS3 controller included with your console to control the playback of a Blu Ray movie. Pressing the Triangle button on your PS3 controller will bring up a transparent menu over film as it plays. From here, you can select from a bevy of options, including the standard "pause," "play," "rewind," "fast forward," and "slow motion," as well as top menu, pop-up menu, time information, A/V settings, and more.

You can also access many of these controls without brining up the menu overlay. Pressing Start will pause and unpause the playback of the movie, while pressing and holding the shoulder buttons of the controller will fast forward and rewind.

If you'd prefer to use a traditional remote control for movie playback, Sony sells a stand-alone remote as well. Personally, I found using the PS3 controller a little cumbersome at first, but after getting used to it, I don't plan to purchase an additional remote despite watching Blu Ray movies frequently.

Additional Bonuses

Blu Ray playback is not the only way of watching movies on the Playstation 3. As with most Blu Ray players, you can also watch DVDs, removing the need to replace your entire movie collection. High definition and standard definition movies are also available on a pay-per-view basis from the Playstation Network. You can rent films and have them streamed directly to your computer, or purchase them and store them on your hard drive. PS3 also supports Netflix streaming.

The fantastic Blu Ray capabilities of the PS3 make it an appealing movie device, even for customers who have no immediate intentions of playing video games.
