The Pacific Northwest Onscreen: Watching The Best Portland/oregon Movies On Satellite Tv

While cities like Los Angeles and New York might end up spending more than their

fair share of time on the silver screen, there are just as many films devoted to other less-famous locations throughout the country. And one city that has popped up in films time and time again is actually a quiet spot in the Pacific Northwest that tends to attract a lot of people who enjoy riding bicycles and working on independent art projects. While Portland, Oregon might be a name that many young hipsters recognize, countless other Americans might be unaware that the city has managed to play such a big role in countless films. But chances are, the next time you're flipping through channels on satellite tv, there's going to be at least one movie on that was either filmed in Oregon, or actually focuses on Portland.

Whether moving to the Pacific Northwest and looking for films that capture the essence of the surroundings or simply interested in seeing your home city depicted celluloid, here are some of the best films about Portland, Oregon that have been made so far. Sorry "Twilight" fans; your movie series was filmed somewhere else, though also with Pacific Northwest pride.

Paranoid Park - Gus Van Sant is well known for his ability to depict subcultures, something that he's managed to do well countless times before with promising young actors. In "Paranoid Park," a young skateboard accidentally takes part in an accident that causes everyone to get in way over their head. Giving away the mysteries and twists would make the film less worth watching, but with so many different plot turns, plus great depictions of Portland throughout, there's no reason to switch the channel if this pops up on satellite tv.

Bongwater. One of those films that features a whole lot of famous actors but is not famous itself, "Bongwater" is more than a typical stoner comedy. Made in the late 1990s, viewers can expect some of the same tropes that are in other comedies of this same time, but with great performances from Luke Wilson, Brittany Murphy, and Jack Black. Other famous 1990s actors also make appearances in the film, including Jeremy Sisto, Jamie Kennedy, and Andy Dick, and anyone who is a fan of these actors will find the film worthwhile enough alone for these appearance. An uneven indie film, "Bongwater" still does a good job of portraying Portland.

Stand By Me. Not shot directly in Portland but rather, around Oregon, this classic tale of four boys growing up and going out on an adventure for the first time tends to make people weep, even if it's a tenth or eleventh viewing on satellite tv. With early performances by River Phoenix and Corey Feldman, this is one of those films that has managed to endure year after year.

The Goonies. Another classic, this one more about not growing up than giving in and letting go. Filmed in Portland and around Oregon, the famous rock from the water scenes is still there, attracting plenty of those who are still young at heart, though not in reality anymore. Pirate adventures and other worlds are only part of the story in this touching 1980s classic.
