This is the most majestic animal found in the jungle. It is also known as the King of the Jungle or the lion. It is a social animal and lives in a group also known as the pride of up to fifteen females, their cubs and one to three males. All the females in the group are usually related. The males are in the group very temporary. If another male stronger than the dominant male comes and fights it off, it leaves and goes to search for another pride to join. The male has a distinct mane that covers its neck and part of the back. The Panthera Leo mates all year round. The gestation period is normally about a hundred and ten days. The female normally gives birth to between three and four cubs at a time. These cubs are very vulnerable and can be predated by hyenas, leopards and jackal. The male lions have been known to kill the cubs so as to be able to mate with the mother. After birth, the mothers hide the young cubs in holes or long bushes until they are a bit old and safe. The life span of the Panthera Leo is about ten to fourteen years. It is purely a carnivore. The females are the ones who do most of the hunting for the family. They work as a team and they normally bring down big animals such as the buffalo and wildebeests at night when they have a vision advantage. They then call the rest of the family to share in on the kill.
