The Passion of Pollensa for a Mallorca Holliday

When on your MALLORCA HOLIDAY RENTALS, especially at fiesta time, head over to Pollensa for some of the best party times on the island. Pollensa, a town in Mallorca, has one of the largest festivals on the island celebrating every year. The festival lasts for a week and prior to the festival the town has already spent time selecting who will play which part, as the festival is a re-enactment of a battle between Christians and Moors.

On May 30th 1550 Joan Mas won a momentous victory over the Moors, led by the pirate Dragut Rais. The battle raged through the town. The re-enactment initiates at the Square of Almoina at 19.00 in the evening where the locals playing the parts of Joan Mas and Dragut Reis meet. A few words are spoken before the battle starts as combatants fight. Sword against shield, spears swung from side to side, flags flowing in the gentle breeze. As the Battle reaches the Church of Sant Jordi, the re-enactment continues with the release of women and children imprisoned there. Then again the battle moves off through the town down the narrow streets flowing out on to the football field of Ca'n Escarrintxo. This time the actor playing Joan Mas takes the enemy flag and leads his men to the parish church where they sing in thanks giving to the Mare de Du dels Angels for their victory. The end of the battle is followed by music and fireworks in Via Pollentia.

If aiming to watch the spectacle beware as the mock battles are fought with passion by the Mallorcans. Tourists are welcome to watch but cannot take part. If unfortunately you missed that festival, there are plenty of others that happen during the year. For example the 365 steps, one for each day of the year, leading to the Calvari church also has a traditional festival during Easter. A long cobbled street that reaches from the small church on the top of Calvari Hill is a popular walk for many tourists who are in Mallorca for their holidays and either side of the street lined with palms and pine trees. It is a depiction of Stations of the Cross, referring to the final hours of Jesus, who is then placed on the cross. After the crucifixion the body of Christ removed and then in a sombre torchlight parade, the body carried down the steps and through the town. Many hundreds of the locals wearing masks and pointed hats lead the procession, all of which done in total silence except for the slow beating of a solitary drum.

If there during the middle of January celebrate Sant Antoni, with the locals roasting "botifarrons" on small bonfires. The next day an enormous fir tree smeared with eggs and soap is paraded through the town, while the young men of the village will try and climb it. There are so many traditions that the locals are passionate about and keep doing year on year making Pollensa one of the best MALLORCA HOLIDAY RENTALS towns.
