The Penile Papule Problem: An Embarrassing Condition
One might have hoped that we would have evolved as a society by this point to a state
of mind where we don't find health problems and differences embarrassing and taboo. Unfortunately, we aren't quite there yet. The penile papule, a lesion that manifests as a pearly ring of bumps on the penis, is a perfect example of this. We tend to still consider any talk about out "private parts" taboo, especially when there is something wrong. We associate bumps and lesions in that area with disease, compounding the issue. These lesions have nothing to do with STDs or any other kind of disease, of course, although they are similar enough in appearance that you should get them looked at by a doctor before moving forward. Once you're sure this is what you have, however, you can look into dealing with it responsibly.
Easing Your Mind
Before you begin looking into penile papule treatment, it's important to get a grasp on not only what you're dealing with, but what you aren't dealing with. This is why seeing a doctor is so important in the beginning. Anytime you have an anomaly on your skin, you should have it evaluated by a professional, regardless of how certain your internet research has made you. Once you know that it isn't a disease of any kind, let that burden fall off your shoulders. The condition is cosmetic only and should not pose any harm to those who have it. That doesn't necessarily make it any more desirable, but it should certainly ease your mind.
Identification
As much as you might hear, "see a doctor", it's only natural to want to know for yourself what you might be dealing with. Fair enough, people have a right to do their own research. Your best bet is to look for pictures of the penile papule and compare them directly to your problem. If this cannot be done, look for identifying characteristics. The bumps are typically small and will form around the rim of the penis's head. They may be the same color as the surrounding skin or a lighter, more pearlescent color. While they shouldn't cause pain, some men do complain of discomfort or increased sensitivity.
Treatment
In many cases, the penile papule row will disappear on its own with time. This is especially true when it forms during adolescence. If it remains or you aren't willing to live with it, you may want to seek out removal options. The best method of doing so is through a doctor. There is no shortage of snake oil being sold to "cure" the problem, but none of these have been proven effective. Talk to your doctor and evaluate the various options for removal.
