The first step on the way to getting cosmetic surgery of any kind is always a preliminary consultation with the plastic surgeon

. While nothing is stopping you from simply winging it and heading into the meeting with the intention of flying by the seat of your pants, you might want to put some more preparation into it. After all, few doctors provide consultations for free. Therefore, you should get as much information out of your meeting as possible. Here are some of the things you should bring with you to maximize the efficiency of your time.

Questions

Obviously, you'll want to ask questions of your plastic surgeon when going in for a consultation, but don't make the mistake of believing you'll remember everything you want to ask. You won't. A far better approach is to keep an ongoing list of questions, adding to it in the days and weeks leading up to your consultation. Whenever something comes to mind, write it down and then bring the list with you. A good doctor will never make you feel rushed when meeting with you. After all, nine times out of ten, they are charging for this meeting, so they should understand that they are on your time. Ask as many questions as you want.

Photographs

If you do your research, you'll see a lot of conflicting information when it comes to bringing photographs to your plastic surgeon. While it's true that you shouldn't go into the process thinking that your doctor can "make you look like" this celebrity or that one, pictures make a great starting point when it comes to discussing your goals. Without pictures, you're left only with words and it can be difficult to explain exactly what you want from your procedure. If you have pictures to point to, you will be able to get your thoughts across much more clearly. Your doctor won't hesitate to tell you if your expectations are unrealistic.

A Friend

Going in to see a plastic surgeon can be stressful and nerve-wracking. If you are nervous about your upcoming consultation, consider bringing a friend for moral support. Even if you prefer they stay out in the waiting room, just having them there can be invaluable when it comes to boosting your confidence.

Your Medical History

From your standpoint, the initial consultation is about learning more about the procedure, evaluating the plastic surgeon, and deciding whether or not to go through with it. From the doctor's standpoint, however, it is about evaluating you as a candidate. Part of that means looking at your medical history so make sure you're ready to answer a few questions of your own.
