Many people prefer asphalt driveways to concrete or brick for a variety of reasons
. One of the main reasons may lie in the fact that it is easier to resurface asphalt than any other material. In fact, if you drive along any highway you will discover that most resurfacing of road is done with asphalt instead of attempting to use the original material. In fact, when it comes to repair work on any kind of concrete surface, asphalt is a great material for filling in holes and avoiding a costly resurfacing job.
Of course, there are drawbacks to using asphalt with the major being any major fluctuation in temperature. It can be a very difficult material with which to work in either extreme cold or extreme heat. Asphalt is very hot from the start but if you attempt to lay it on a surface that is already hot from the sun or outdoor temperature you may find it takes longer to dry because the heat will prevent it from hardening. Of course, the opposite is true in extremely cold weather-it may harden before it reaches the surface.
Repairing or installing asphalt driveways is a job that you should attempt to perform during the spring or fall when the extreme temperatures are not as prominent. Of course, it is not impossible to do and your contractor will advise you of the best time to use asphalt to repair or install any driveway. If you do it in the summer it may be better to do it after the sun goes down and the temperature is cooler. Do expect it to take longer to cool during the hotter months of the year, however.
