The process of welding is to heat to metals to melting point and combine them together at the heated region. The molten metals will then cool down and combine making a strong bond which is nearly unbreakable. A metal rod known as the filler is inserted and acts as an electrode and passes a current to the point of solder. This point is heated via electrical charges either positive or negative. The positive charges produce a strong penetrating current suitable for thick metals while the negative current is ideal for thinner metals or for a finer finish.

Oxidization is a frequently occurring problem during welding. Rusting during welding will make the object unusable. A method employed by welders to avoid this problem is to use gas shielding. Inserting an inert gas during welding will prevent oxidization. The gas is inserted in two different ways. The filler wire is coated with anti-oxidizing layer which vaporizes due to the extreme heat and forms a protective space around the solder point. The method is to directly and constantly inject gases such as argon into the region till the welding is complete. Argon is generally mixed with helium to prevent combustion.

The window of time through which oxidization occurs is small therefore the gas needs to be released only for a brief period of time. Another method of shielding is to use a rust proof coating on the filler metal. This prevents oxidization by vaporizing the coating during the intense soldering process. Generally all welding machines use the gas shielding method as it is a standard form of protection against oxidization.

Welding can be a dangerous process. Therefore it is vital to exercise extreme caution. The machinery use to weld forms a dangerous circuit which can harm the welder. The live current passing through the machinery poses a dangerous threat to inexperienced handlers. Therefore items such as ground clamps to reduce the threat are used. The circuit is generally formed via the welding machine, the metal and the gun.
