The proliferation of used engines in private mechanic shops and home garages in the last decade has been nothing less than astounding

. This is in large part due to the increase in the quality of auto recyclers who process used engines, higher industry standards, and intelligent consumers demanding the biggest bang for their dollar.

The companies selling used engines arent your mom and pop junk yards anymore. Sure, those places exist, but theyre out of business (even though they dont know it yet). In days past, junk yards existed merely to store vehicles until they could be crushed. Body parts and a few other non-critical components were removed and sold, but only if the buyer and the customer happened to be in the right place at the right time.

The advent of computerized inventory systems has revolutionized the sourcing of used engines. In the past, if a customer was looking for (just as an example) an engine for their 2004 Toyota Camry, if the local yards didnt have it, the consumer had to go with an expensive remanufactured engine or junk the car. A few phone calls might be made but by and large used engines were only sourced locally.

Salvage yards that properly list their inventory can typically sell used engines as quickly as they can test and pull them. Many suppliers of used engines report a much lower failure rate than the 7-8% expected from remanufacturers around 4-5%. A common denominator among both types of failures is, sadly, installer error.

The last piece of the equation is that consumers have gotten smarter. Fear is what used to drive people to avoid used engines. There were legitimate fears that the product wasnt tested. This is no longer the case from reputable recyclers. There were fears because of the lack of warranty. Good suppliers now give a 90 day warranty, while the best give a year or more. The last thing was the fear of longevity. The truth is that high mileage used engines wont last long. Those are worn out. The secret is to find good, low mileage used engines, and the secret on how to do this is out. Its called vehicle history reports, and any reputable supplier will provide them.
