The Proper Method For Lighting A Pipe
Pipe smoking is a great way to enjoy some relaxing free time
. Smoking a pipe is not something that is only for older folks. It is a hobby that is being picked up by many people of all ages all across the world. Learning how to properly pack a pipe with tobacco and then learning to properly light it can be challenging experiences for those new to pipe smoking. A mistake made in either step can drastically change the enjoyment of the smoking experience. There are two different methods for lighting a pipe. One is to use lighters and the other uses matches.
Lighting your pipe really starts with packing it. If you pack it too full and too tight, it will not light properly and will go out. If you pack it too loosely, it will not burn properly either. You also need to make sure that you do not light it all in one go - pipe smoking requires "false starts". You also need to make sure that you have the right tools - a match will work, as will a lighter that uses butane. Avoid lighter fluid-filled lighters, as they can cause off flavors in your tobacco. Torch lighters are good options here, as they can easily be used upside down for a smooth, even light.
The first light requires you to move your flame very slowly around the top of the bowl. Make sure that you do it evenly. Draw in through the pipe stem gently while doing this. Char the top layer of tobacco and then stop. Allow it to go back out and then tamp it back down once more. Repeat the process once more, tamping the tobacco back down when you're done.
Take the lighter and very slowly pass it over the top of the tobacco in the pipe bowl. While you are running the lighter over the tobacco begin to puff on the pipe. This will cause the top layer of tobacco to become charred and it will come up to the top of the pipe bowl. Give the tobacco a few moments to go out and then use a pipe tamper to tamp the risen charred tobacco. Do this whole process over again to create another layer of charred tobacco.
If you find that you are unable to draw on your pipe even though there is plenty of tobacco left in it, use a reamer tool to clear the pipe's smoke hole. You can do this by removing the tip of the pipe so that you are able to access the tobacco chamber where the smoke hole is located. Check to see if this tiny smoke hole has been clogged with tobacco and, if so, clear it out with a thin steel rod specifically made for this purpose.
