The Purposes Of Fire Guards
Whether this is because of mans primitive instincts equating fire with hot food and
protection or the sometimes hypnotic beauty of dancing flames does not really matter. What does matter is the fact that a fireplace, no matter how small, is probably the focal point of any room in your home.
Part of ensuring that your fireplace truly becomes the focal point and room-enhancing feature that it should be is finding beautiful and functional fire guards to place in front of your fireplace. Finding fire guards that fit your style and the needs of the room where your fireplace is located may seem complicated, but in fact, there are multiple options out there if you take the time to look. You should almost certainly be able to find guards that fit your space, your style, your safety needs, and your budget.
A fire guard is an essential part of your fireplace. They are screens, made of many different materials, which sit in front of the fireplace, especially when a fire is lit there. The guards have a few different purposes.
Of course fire guards act as a safety feature, both preventing accidental touching of a hot surface by a child or unwitting adult but also by preventing sparks from flying out of the fireplace and landing on flammable surfaces inside the room. This second safety role played by the fire guard is not so vital now as it used to be because of the proliferation of the gas fireplace, but the necessity of the first role cannot be overstated. Children are drawn to flames just as adults can be, so it is vital that if you are going to have open fire in your home you must do all you can to minimise the risk of a child trying to reach out and touch the pretty colors.
Also, by deflecting the heat coming from the fireplace upward, an adequate fire guard allows the room to warm more evenly and allows everyone around the fire to be comfortably warm without feeling the need to rotate like a chicken on a spit as part of them gets excessively warm while the rest stays cool.
Lastly, a fire guard acts as a fashion accessory for the big soot-blackened hole in your wall when the fire is not burning. It can function as a screen to hide, or at least soften, the look of an empty fireplace. This is when taking the time to shop can be important as, just like any other furniture item in the room, you want to love it and feel like it enhances the look you are trying to achieve.
