The Reasons Why Pluto Was Demoted

For many years we have believed that there are nine planets in our galaxy

. However in 2005 some astronomers have discovered so many objects in the Kuiper Belt. In this belt they also found a bigger object than Pluto which is one of the answers to the question why is Pluto not a planet. A big object has been found and they named it 2003 UB313, later renamed to Eris. The size of the Eris object is estimated at twenty five percent heavier than Pluto. Eris is bigger because of the ice mixed with rocks found there. The astronomers had to make a clear decision on how to define a planet. They were confused on how to classify Eris. They may recognize it as an object in the Kuiper Belt or it can automatically become a planet.

The second answer to the question why is Pluto not a planet is because of the definition clearly made by the association of astronomers in Prauge in 2006. One of the definitions given at the convention would have still made Pluto a planet but it would also include Ceres and Eris. It would actually make twelve planets, if it was the final definition that everyone agreed on. Another version however prevailed. The other definition kept nine planets only. It defined that the total number of planets that everyone knows should be kept to nine without any scientific basis. The third definition dropped down to the number of planets to eight.

The third answer to the question why is Pluto not a planet is because all the astronomers in the 2006 Prague convention all finally agreed in classifying Pluto as a dwarf planet. They decided to demote Pluto and make Eris another dwarf planet.

The fourth answer to the question why is Pluto not a planet is because of the International Astronomical Union's definition of a planet. They defined a planet as orbiting around the sun. It also needs to have sufficient gravity so it can be sphere in shape. Lastly it needs to clear out its neighborhood out of its own orbit. This definition does not make Pluto a planet because it cannot clear its own neighborhood. Pluto has other tinier objects orbiting with it. This definition makes Pluto a dwarf planet. Pluto can eventually become a planet if it consumes the other objects near to it and gain more mass.

It is not really inevitable that in the near future, astronomers would eventually find another space object that would be considered a full planet. For now Pluto is classified as a dwarf planet.
