Links that are closer to the top or on the first page of a search page always gets preference. Webmasters optimize their websites to get the highest rank possible by high-quality link building to their websites as it is the most important step to increase page ranking.

A link will make the website be indexed by the search engines in order for them to rank the pages for the target keywords. Search engines use the links to determine the relevance of the webpage according to the search terms. By building links from websites relevant to yours it will ensure that the page gets indexed, thus ranked accordingly by the search engine.

Website owners often make the mistake not to realize to look at sites that are relevant to the category that their sites are falling under when placing links. If for instance your site sells motor spares and services it would naturally make sense to build links to sites similar to yours or relates to what you offer on your site. Linking in this instance to a site such as cooking or gardening would be a total waste of time.

Linking about relevance will not only get you links, but traffic as well. By monitoring the web directories and blog directories there is always new sites to be found and the new, young sites will actually jump at the opportunity of linking with a more established site. Links consist of an anchor text, which is the visible part and the URL which is the address of the particular site the link point to.

The keywords of your site in the anchor text are a key element in successful link building to get a higher page rank. There is outbound and inbound links, outbound is the one on your website that points to another web page, whereas inbound links points from another web page towards your web page. The other two links are reciprocal, which are a two-way link and one-way links.

Reciprocal links is a links exchange between webmasters, and webmasters should be aware that having to many reciprocal links would make the search engines take it as a sign of trying to manipulate page ranking, which can result to penalization. The one-way link is more valuable as the search engines have to guess about the agreement. Search engines vote for a website when other websites links to the particular web site as search engines rank web pages on the amount of links pointing to them.

It is very important to have links from web pages that has a high ranking already as it will prove to search engines that your web page may also be important. Link baiting's aim is to generate more traffic and indexing from search engines by making different websites wanting to link to your website out of their own accord, which can be a great challenge. It is not impossible though if you use information to advertise that is completely unique and a bit controversial.
