The River Tay

The longest river in Scotland is the Tay which covers a total distance of 120 miles (193 km)

. The start of the river is to be found on the Ben Lui's northern slopes and finally ends at the Firth of Tay which lies just past Perth, Perthshire.

Over the course of its journey the water in the river passes through a number of different areas of Scotland. Then once it arrives in the Firth of Tay it joins the River Earn. As well as being Scotland's longest river it also has the honour of having the largest catchment of any river in this part of the UK. It actually has a catchment of around 2,400 square miles (6,216 square km).

The River Tay is actually one of Scotland's top salmon rivers, along with two others namely the Tweed and Spey. It is because of these that thousands of anglers every year come to this river to try their like and hopefully catch the big one. A great many anglers choose to come in the spring as when this is when the salmon are supposedly at their best. But the river is one that in fact salmon can be found in it throughout the year although they may be a little more elusive when the weather is warm and the sun is shining.

But for many anglers along with May and June being the best time to try and catch salmon so are September and October. These are the best times because this is when the main salmon runs occur as they head to and from the grounds where the new salmon will be spawned.

Not only does the River Tay offer you the chance to catch salmon but there are other breeds worth considering trying to catch, including Brown Trout and Rainbow Trout.
