So, you want a distilled condensed summary of the hardwood mat industry

? Well, last week we gave you just that and looked at the ways that bridge matting, crane mats and every other variation you can think of is involved in our daily lives. Without oversimplifying a complex industry, we came to the conclusion that although there are lots of different things hardwood mats are used for, they often are used for a few very basic but incredibly important purposes. We are going to take that a step further and boil it down to one word, stability. Hardwood mats are stability where there is unstable footing. They are a hard surface where otherwise there is only marsh, mud, and miles of moist earth. So, with that fundamental and vital characteristic defined and declared, we can move on to the details, the details of how the mat comes into being, the story of its birth! Over the course of the next several weeks, we are going to look at how exactly hardwood mats are made. We will spare no detail, watching the development of a hardwood mat from a seed in the soil to a mat used for stabilizing soil. The full lifecycle is about to be unveiled, so watch out!

Were going to start at the beginning (where else could we possibly start?). We want the whole story, and to get the whole story, youve got to go to the roots in this case, literally. Specifically, we find dendrology, the study of trees. As in any lumber based industry, the tree is at the core of it all. Tree growth is really at the center of hardwood matting. In the coming weeks we are going to look at what trees grow quick enough and strong enough to meet the demands of the industry. We are also going to look at the process of a seed becoming a sapling, a sapling becoming a tree, and a tree becoming a hardwood mat.
