The SSDI Application Process: What You Need to Know
The SSDI Application Process: What You Need to Know
The Social Security Disability Insurance program (SSDI) is a federally funded program that provides cash benefits to workers who have become completely disabled. During the first stage, your application is screened by the Social Security Administration to make sure that you meet the basic requirements before it is forwarded on further consideration. The Social Security Administration uses a tier system that includes five steps in determining your eligibility for SSDI.
How to Apply
To apply for Social Security Disability Insurance you must first fill out an application and complete a disability report. You can do this online. You will be directed to complete a starter kit for disability insurance. The starter kit is designed to prepare you for your interview. The actual name of the kit is "Disability Starter Kit "and you can download it from the Social Security Administration's website. Once you have completed the forms, you will be directed to print them out, sign and return them to your local Social Security Administration's office.
Apply In Person
You can also call to make an appointment to go in person to the Social Security Administration's office at which time you can complete and hand in the required forms. You also have the option of having a phone interview at which time the forms will be completed for you.
When you call to make your appointment, you will be sent the "Disability Starter Kit." This starter kit will give you a head start with the information that you will be required to provide when you go in for your interview. It contains a fact sheet with common questions and answers, a checklist that will help you ensure that you have all the required documents and a worksheet that will assist you with organizing everything that is requested.
The Information That You'll Need
Some of the items that you are required to provide during your interview are:
Birth certificate
Social Security card
Contact information for all caregivers, along with a summary with dates and times of any clinic visits or hospital stay
Medication information including dosage
Medical records including lab work
Work history summary
Recent copy of your W-2 or tax return if you are self-employed
The Social Security Administration advises that you should still apply even if you are unable to provide any of the required documents above, many of which they can help you obtain.
What to Expect
The interview process can take up to an hour to complete. Once the basic requirements are met, your application will be forwarded on to be medically determined. From the time you're your application is approved for Social Security Disability Insurance it could take five months after that before you receive your first cash payment. However, the process could take longer because of a backlog of applications from so many other people applying for Social Security Disability Insurance. Because the process can take so long, it is recommended that you apply for SSDI as soon as you become disabled.
