The Secret To Getting Rich
If You Don't Love What You Do, You Will Never Get Rich
I run a recruiting firm and don't answer the main line too much, however one of the phones happened to be right next to me yesterday and it was late in the day, so I figured I would answer. On the other line of the phone was a younger professional (it's all relative as I'm 28) and he told me that he wanted to be in sales and his goal was to make $100,000 per year. Though, the problem was that he did not know what he wanted to do. He seemingly had no particular passion. Not knowing what you want to do is quite common. In fact, you are in the majority.
About a week ago, I came across a very witty quote upon searching through the internet (I am paraphrasing) that adults ask children what they want to do because they don't know themselves. Until you find a career which you find fun, challenging and are good at, the money is not going to come. I find little exception to this rule as people who love what they do, work hard at it. Passion is what makes us rich. Take Warren Buffett for example. He still worked after making his first billion because he is passionate about the stock market.
You see, the money comes from the work - not the other way around. If money came naturally, well we would just find some other form of barter because everybody would have tons of dollars, pesos, Euros, etc. The people who make money are the ones who put everything they have into work even if this means 12 - 14 hour days. Typically, it does mean 12 - 14 days. Also, the successful people create work while their competitors accept that it is a slow day. For instance, today I have a free hour and it is slow at the office, so I am writing this article because I know that if published, it promotes by business. The successful people are also the most cunning; I mean this as a compliment. They firmly understand that there is a final goal for their work. These goals could be to break into an account and make a sale or to get a job in advertising - pretty much anything. Though, the difference is that they get creative with how they go about achieving this goal.
Let's take this individual we previously discussed. Instead of just sending out his resume and hoping for the best, he should have had a game plan and treated the job hunt as something enjoyable and challenging, rather than mundane. He should have started with some certain steps which, even though I am a recruiter, these thoughts are not exclusive to my industry. This individual should have called the college which he graduated from, he should have started to use FaceBook, Linked-In, Twitter and other social media sites, he could have cold-called HR, he could have done a lot of things and probably learned a few lessons throughout the process. Remember:
Challenging = Fun. Fun=Willingness to perform hard work. Hard work = Money. This is the best I can explain it.
