. One trend that never dies, no matter the year or the season, is that men want a rock-hard six pack and women want a flat, sexy stomach. Unfortunately, many people are confused about how to go about achieving this goal. One of the most common misconceptions out there is that you can burn fat and get a six pack simply by doing ab exercises. Ab exercises will not help you burn fat; they will make not you skinnier. In fact, if you only have a little extra weight around your stomach, doing an excessive amount of ab exercises can actually expand your waistline, since they will build your core muscles. In order to see your abdominal muscles, you must first burn the fat off your stomach.

When you first begin your quest towards that six pack or, in the case of women, just a toned stomach, you should start out with several weeks or months of cardiovascular training. I would refrain from doing many ab exercises during this time, as that will actually expand your waist while you are trying to lose weight. Once you have lost enough fat around your midsection that you think you will be able to see your abdominals, then you can start incorporating ab exercises into your daily workout. Remember, unless you burn off the fat, you wont be able to see your abs; you might get a strong core, but you wont ever achieve an actual "six pack." One important thing to keep in mind throughout this whole process is that without a healthy diet, you are unlikely to slim down to a point where you can see your abs.
