The Solutions To Infant Hearing Disabilities

, hearing impairments in babies are not seen until they are about two years and this happens more than half of the time which might lead to problems that will last a lifetime. Today, the NIH committee urges the use of this new technology that helps see if new born indeed have hearing problems by giving then a few standard test. The response of the audience composed of healthcare workers who work closely with children who are hearing impaired was positive.
Statistics suggest that for 1,000 babies born in the US one will be seen to have hearing disabilities according to the committee organized by the National Institute of Health. Less than half are identified early because current practices call for screening only those infants with a high risk of hearing impairment because of premature birth or other problems. To avoid dealing with permanent speech and language damages to the child doctors must run test on children before they are three years old declares the chairman of the committee and a professor at Loyola University in Chicago.
The existing age limit that a child should be tested for hearing loss is two and one half however the professor said they hope to lower this to about 6 months. Now the market has better and more advanced technologies that allow doctors to test new born for any hearing damages. At the same time a new recommendation had been made for since a new way of screening is available where babies can be tested for hearing problems by looking for otoacoustic emissions.
While a clicking sound is being played the tool will then check for echoes in the inner ear and this simple process is what the test will involve. A computer will then try to analyze the response to see if function in the inner ear is normal. In order to really verify the presence of hearing deficiencies a secondary test will be done which will now use the system named auditory brainstem responses.
With this second test, a sensor will be placed on the head of the infant and then the clicking sound is made. If the sound is heard normally, the sensor will indicate that it has detected a characteristic brain wave pattern.
Here, the test will be able to determine how a baby will respond to the sounds they hear. If one gets the otoacoustic emission test then they will need about $25 while the second is around $75 to $125 since it will involve more processes. If all US new born were screened after birth, it would cost the nation $150 million to $200 million, but it could save the country billions of dollars by increasing the earning power of those who get early treatment.
It is estimated that a child whose hearing loss is not seen by the time they turn 3 years old will lose about $400,000 to $800,000 in lifetime earnings since their speech abilities will be greatly affected by this age. It is said that when hearing loss is not detected early some high school graduates will end up with the reading skills of a fourth to seventh grader only.
There is really a clear difference when a child is diagnosed with hearing impairments earlier as they are now able to go to normal schools rather than the more expensive specialized one. Therefore a country will be able to save on expenses with early detection.
