The Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 has seen a recent UK TV ad campaign

, suggesting it is set to be a popular handset. With an exceptional specification list, this stylish new touch screen handset looks set to give certain competitors a run for their money.

As one would expect, the XPERIA X10 makes use of a variety of different connectivity methods for staying connected to both cellular networks and the internet. Class 10 versions of both GPRS & EDGE are utilised as the primary methods of cellular network connection in all but the most isolated areas. In areas covered by 3G, HSDPA provides a fast web browsing experience at speeds of up to 7.2 mega bytes per second (in conjunction with HSUPA at 2 mega bytes per second). Wi-Fi is included, which takes advantage of wireless internet routers where available to provide an even faster connection. The XPERIA X10 can be connected to other hardware such as compatible phones and computers via both Bluetooth and USB connections.

One of this handset's most impressive features is the stunning 8 mega pixel camera. Obviously, the quality of the resulting images is very high, and a number of image enhancing features form the camera's accompanying software package. These include autofocus, LED flash, touch focus and image stabilisation, so budding photographers can take memorable snapshots with the minimum of fuss. The camera can also shoot video, and this is in WVGA quality at a frame rate of 30 per second, so as with still images, the resulting product is of impressive quality.

The XPERIA X10 is not a small handset, however this is due to the generously proportioned touch screen. The TFT capacitive touch screen measures 4 inches and operates at a pixel layout of 480x854 pixels, wherein it displays up to 65k colours, resulting in high quality display of on screen content. An accelerometer sensor is built in which allows the screen to be viewed in both portrait and landscape forms. The handset itself only weighs 135 grams which is impressive given the size of its screen, and this coupled with its slim line profile make it a pocket friendly handset which is comfortable to use on the move.

Vibration and MP3 ringtones are the alert types available with the XPERIA X10 along with a built in composer which allows users to create custom ringtones from scratch. A versatile media player and a selection of pre-installed games are provided to keep users entertained on the go. Facebook and Twitter integration provide a convenient means of staying up to date with friends and family, whilst applications to Google and YouTube offer a shortcut to some of the most popular sites on the web.

Android v1.6 is the OS of choice within the XPERIA X10, providing a fast and smooth user interface, and handles demanding applications with ease. Available in both Black and White, the XPERIA X10 looks set to be a hit for Sony Ericsson. This is thanks to its impressive spec list and appealing hardware.
