The Spread Of Pizzerias

Pizza is sold in virtually every country of the world and is one of the most popular foods in the world

. Even in countries with no history of eating Western food, pizza is an instant hit. North Korea is a good example of this phenomenon. In 2009, the first pizzeria opened in Pyongyang and it was an immediate runaway success.

The world's first pizzeria opened in 1830 by Raffaele Esposito in Naples, Italy. It was called the Pizzeria Brandi and was very popular right from the start. It is still open today and is still very popular despite a much higher level of competition. The first Margherita pizza was made there in 1889 in honour of Margarita of Savoy, the then queen of Italy. It was made using ingredients to replicate the colours of the new flag of Italy. Mozzarella was the white, tomato sauce was the red and the basil was the green.

Gennaro Lombardi opened the first American pizzeria in Little Italy, Manhattan in 1905. He originally opened the premises as an Italian grocery store in 1897, but installed a pizza oven in 1905 and gave over part of the premises to a pizzeria. The pizzeria closed in 1984, but Lombardi's Grandson opened a new pizzeria just down the street from the original, in 1994. It is also called Lombardi's.

Pizza was not sold to the public in the UK until the early 1930s. The first record of a restaurant selling pizza was Olivelli's, which opened in 1934 in Store Street, London, WC1. There were already a few Italian restaurants in London, but none can prove that they sold pizza prior to 1934. In 1993, Giovanni Salamone renovated and re-opened the property as a restaurant called Pizza Paradiso Olivelli. It became the first in his chain of pizzerias. There are currently 3 shops in the chain. In addition, the company is now opening Cafee Deli Paradisco shops too.

Pizza Hut is the largest chain of pizza restaurants in the world, but was relatively late in opening their pizza restaurants. The founders Frank and Dan Carney opened their first pizzeria in Wichita, Kansas in 1958. In 1973, they spread from the US to Canada, Japan and the UK. They now have 34,000 outlets in 100 countries.
