The Strangest Type Of Storage

Space - It's something that is often in short supply

, secure storage is something that is even less available. Imagine the thought of having to store over 25,000 pounds worth of equipment in your garage. It's not going to happen, mainly because the first opportunity that someone finds out about it, your garage is likely to be raided.

That is the prospect that we faced, we had a Superstock motorcycle, paddock stands, pit board, tyre warmers and all the other essentials that it would take to participate in a weekends racing, but nowhere to store it. That was until we found the benefits of using a self storage company.

We needed somewhere that we could store all our equipment between the various rounds of the championship and after one of the mechanics suggested using one of the self storage companies, it was left to me to investigate.

Some of the companies that I phoned were insistent that they wouldn't take our bike in their storage compartments as it contained flammable substances that would invalidate their buildings warranty. However, after searching around I quickly found a company close by that we could use to store all of our equipment in. It was secure with 24-hour CCTV, easily accessible enabling us to move the bike and pit equipment in and out at the start and end of every race weekend and mainly it was cost effective.

We even had room in our storage unit to store some other items from the team, the usual suspects here, snowboards, skis and other extreme sports items.

The season passed by without a hitch; on a Friday morning we would head down to the facility, load the van up and head off to the track. After three entertaining days of action, we would head back to the facility and drop it all off, before heading back to our normal day to day lives. If we had a bad weekend and we had managed to damage the bike then a few of us would head down to the unit in the week to perform some running repairs before the next meeting.

When the season was over, we returned to the facility to place the bike back in the unit for the last time, we looked for a buyer for the bike and set our budget for the next season's racing before performing the last and maybe most essential task. Planning the winter vacation to the Italian mountains for some rest, relaxation and snowboarding.
