The most striking difference, obviously, would be the size, weight and structure of the two items. Tablets are designed to be incredibly easy to transport. Most devices in the category carry a foot print of just 10.5 inches and weigh less than two pounds. It, essentially, is no different than carrying a notebook with you. The traditional laptop can be anywhere from 12.1 inch across to 18+ inches and carry a weight of between 4 and 9lbs. There is a large spread in the world of laptops but even the best laptop computers are more than two pounds.

The battery life also comes into play when comparing these devices. Laptop computers can offer a battery life between 3 and 7 hours, depending on the laptop, manufacturer and its power profile. iPads and similar devices have an average battery life of around 10 hours on a single charge. The significantly better battery life, again, helps ensure the portability of the tablet devices.

While iPads and other tablets are certainly portable and useful there are certain aspects of computing that simply can not be done efficiently with the device; or, in other words, there are applications that are just easier to execute on laptops. Typing heavy work and spreadsheets are best left to laptop computers. The physical keyboard, processor speeds and memory simply make it quicker and easier to execute complex computer tasks. Most who have used both device find that the virtual keyboard of the tablet computer is useful on-the-go it can be tedious and difficult to navigate for larger typing projects. Most people still prefer a physical keyboard for more labor intensive documents.

Tabs and laptops are roughly even when it comes to their feature set. Tabs often rely on applications that users download to customize their user experience. These applications can be used for everything from keeping a personal budget, to signing documents and contracts. It truly is up to the consumer to add what they need onto their device. On the other hand, Laptops offer a wide array of software choices that can help you do everything from get online to plan your budget, to organize home improvements.

At the end of the day there is no battle between the laptop computer and the tablet generation.
