The Tea Party Brings Waivers For Obamacare To The Forefront
With the new health care reform package came many new laws that businesses of all types must adhere to
. While these laws were designed to help the American people, as a whole, many businesses are finding that they are put in a difficult situation when it comes to benefit packages.
Because of this issue, several large businesses and unions have applied for, and obtained, waivers to skirt the constraints of the new Obamacare program. To date, two hundred and twenty two companies have applied for these one year waivers, with more and more applying each and every day.
The companies who have received the waivers include Universal Orlando, McDonald's, and Waffle House, just to name a few. This waiver allows the companies to keep the current amount of benefit coverage held, even if it fails to meet the new standards of the law.
Since October of 2010, the numbers of companies applying for and obtaining these waivers has grown substantially. Before October, only thirty companies had the waivers. This has doubled since the beginning of November, and more than one and a half million people, and one hundred and forty thousand members of thirty four different unions are now affected.
These numbers indicate exactly what the tea party has been arguing all along: there is a serious flaw in the new reform laws. The tea party movement is responsible for bringing these matters to light, and is steadfast in their effort to stop the restricted forms of insurance policies that place employers under great pressure to purchase plans they cannot afford, or face large penalties.
The main issue with this provision is that the new plan states a certain amount of money must be spent by companies on benefits. The new health care laws suggest that at least eighty to eighty-five percent of all revenue needs to be spent on benefits for health care.
The idea behind this provision was to stop insurers from padding their salaries, for using extra income for administrative costs, and for purposes that do not directly assist patients with medical care. While this was good in theory, it did not work out as planned and instead forced employers into a difficult situation that lawmakers are now choosing to ignore.
Unless the new laws are modified to help businesses, as well as the public, more and more waivers will be sought, leading to little in the way of progress. The new legislation needs to be repealed or modified in a way that can truly help people in every walk of life.
