Horizontal Wiring: This particular type of wiring can be either inside wiring or plenum cabling and it helps to connect the servers within the equipment/telecommunications room with individual sockets throughout the building. Many corporations also use horizontal wiring to connect to individual work stations and cubicles on selected floors.


Plenum Cabling: Plenum cabling is the cables that are put within the plenum areas of a building. These cables are required to pass through a variety of different fire safety tests in order to comply with the standards provided by the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association).

Plenum Area: As per above, plenum areas are where plenum cables are stored. A plenum area is the part of a building where the air circulation, heating, and air conditioning is facilitated. For this reason, the fire tests are required to ensure the safety of all individuals within the building.

Work-Area Components: Work-area components are objects that help to connect the user to the horizontal cabling that is provided. As an example, having an Ethernet cable connected to the horizontal wiring will be referred to as a work-area component.
