The Three Most Popular Skid Steer Attachments

Many skid steer attachments have made the skid steer loader such a completely practical piece of machinery

. Many of these have evolved from the necessities of owners on the job. One skid steer owner took parts from a concrete breaker and created an amazing post driving tool. Others have bid farewell to their tractors and have adapted their tractor implements for the skid steer. But for their sheer usefulness and adaptability, there are three skid steer attachments that prove time and again to be the most popular that can be purchased. They are: the Fork, the Grapple, and the Backhoe.

THE FORK

The most popular of the skid steer attachments by far is the fork attachment. These are known only as "Pallet Forks" in the realms of the various warehouse industries where the ubiquitous fork lift rules the indoor world. The fork is a heavy-duty steel pair of prongs that is primarily used to pick up, move, and elevate loads of almost any product arranged on top of wooden pallets. Loaded pallets are stored on shelving racks within the warehouse.

However, now that this truly useful tool has been adapted as skid steer attachments, it is often called the poor man's Swiss Army Knife, because apart from lifting pallets high into the air, there is little the attachment cannot do with some imagination. The fork skid steer attachments have been used to pull out stumps and move logs and large rocks. The tool has been used to carry brush and even assist in digging trenches. Contractors have been known to remove one of the tongs and drag it along the ground to dig a quick and easy trench for laying pipework for electrical wire or plumbing.

THE GRAPPLE

The forklift can be used to do some of the work of the grapple though it does not do it as well. But for many jobs, the relatively small price tag it is well worth it. Which brings us to the second most popular of the skid steer attachments: the grapple, sometime called a brush grapple. Constructed of high-grade steel, the grapple skid steer attachments have a reticulated design that resembles a large metal mouth that can chomp down on the gnarliest debris, clearing large areas of land quickly and easily. This skid steer attachment can pull out brush, tree roots, and pick up firewood. The giant steel claw of the skid steer attachment can be seen as an invincible and monstrous extension of a human's hands, doing tough pick-up work in much less time and with fewer laborers.

THE BACKHOE

The "little" backhoe, with its large bucket and sturdy arm, is number three in popularity among the skid steer attachments. It is referred to as "little" because, although it has a larger, self-supported sibling, This small backhoe can do almost everything that the regular backhoe can do at a fraction of the cost. These backhoe skid steer attachments have no problem digging full-size ditches and trenches for water and power lines. And some models have an optional "thumb" with which the operator can pick objects up securely and carry them to a different place with more confidence.

It is certainly not difficult at all to see why these skid steer attachments are so popular: each of them can do many more tasks than what they were originally designed to do, even overlapping a large number of the jobs that other skid steer attachments do. This kind of work is all about getting the job done well and done fast. The only requirements are a lot of guts and a little imagination and the right skid steer attachments.
