The Three Waterfalls Ride Near To Ingleton, North Yorkshire

Ingleton is popular for its waterfall walk together with the famous three peaks challenge in which three peaks near to each other are all climbed

. Nevertheless there is also a very good tour that can also be taken by motor vehicle or cycle to visit 3 waterfalls in the locale, the journey takes you to 3 waterfalls which can be reached by a short walk and ends up at a 13th Century inn which is great for its food and real ale and boasts the highest single drop waterfall in England.

The 1st waterfall is referred to as Gordale Scar. From Ingleton journey east to Malham, the best route is via Settle and follow the narrow road that climbs out of Settle towards Malham. There is a visitor centre (and toilets) at Malham which is worth a look at but to get to Gordale Scar you need to turn right past the visitor centre in the village itself. The road is a dead end but is signposted to Gordale Scar. There is a fair bit of informal off road parking at the start of the walk and usually a snack van serving bacon butties! The walk to the waterfall is about of a mile but the path is well laid and easy; the view at the end is well worth it.

Once back at the car you might also want to have a look at Janets Foss, another waterfall. It is signposted on the other side of the road from the path to Gordale Scar, maybe not as spectacular as Gordale but worth a short detour.

The 2nd waterfall is called Stainforth Force. If you go back to Malham and turn right after you have crossed the river, simply follow the signs to Stainforth. There is a good car park (and toilets) in Stainforth. The walk is about mile, walk along the B6479 towards Helwith Bridge and Horton in Ribblesdale. After a short walk there is a road going off to the left, follow this and you will before long arrive at a bridge traversing the River Ribble, the footpath to the waterfalls commences just after the bridge. Salmon running the rapids can be spotted here.

The third waterfall is at Hardraw which is just north of Hawes. On returning to your vehicle take the B6479 to Ribblehead. It is well worth a stop at Ribblehead as this is the site of the awe inspiring Ribblehead viaduct which carries the Settle Carlisle railway line across the valley. It is possible to walk to the viaduct and along the side of the railway for a few miles.

Continue your journey along the B6255 to Hawes and then Hardraw. The waterfall, known as Hardraw Force is actually in the fifteen acre grounds of the Green Dragon Public house and you need to access it via the pub (a small fee is payable). This is the highest single drop waterfall in England. The Green Dragon Pub is also renowned for the Brass Band Festival that has been occuring in the grounds here for over 120 years on the 2nd Sunday in September.

To return retrace your steps along the B6255 to Ingleton.
