The Top 10 Most Economical Cars Available In 2010
Earlier on in 2010, the Green Car Website developed a list that showcased some of
the most economical cars that are currently available on the UK market.
Looking at the cars overall, most car drivers would have been able to point out some general features of the cars on this list without even seeing it, such as the fact that each car has a small engine and none of the cars could be considered to be any bigger than small family cars.
Having a look through the list that the website produced, the cars listed were as follows.
10th - VW Polo Bluemotion 1
The 1.4 TDI 80 version, the Polo Bluemotion is reported to be the most economical VW ever manufactured, something which is shown by the fact it has the capability to hit a 74.3 mile per gallon ratio
9th and 8th - Ford Fiesta ECOnetic (the three and five door variations)
Entering the market in 2009, the ECOnetic Ford Fiestas are the company's most environmentally friendly cars, thanks largely to their low weight and aerodynamic amendments on the standard model.
Producing so little carbon dioxide emissions that the cars are exempt from vehicle tax, the ECOnetics can achieve a 76.3 MPG
7th and 6th - Seat Ibiza (the three and five door variations)
First introduced to the market in 1984, the versions to make this list are the three and five door versions of the Ecomotive trim, in particular the 1.4 engine variations.
Launched to the market towards the end of 2008 and with a revised model coming off the production line in July 2010, the Seat Ibiza Ecomotive won the 2008 Ecobest award for the most ecological car of the entire year.
5th, 4th, 3rd, 2nd and 1st - Smart ForTwo
Dominating this list is the car that first entered Smart dealers back in 1998 and which has taken the world by storm ever since.
Small, affordable, easy to park and which turned heads wherever they were seen when they first began to be driven on the UK's roads, the top half of this list is taken up by five different trims of exactly the same Smart car.
Seeing a top mile per gallon ratio of 85.6 - close to double what you would be able to get out of a similar sized car, such as a Citroen Saxo or Vauxhall Corsa - the trim that came in at the top spot was the Coupe CDI Pure.
Having a semi-automatic gearbox, carbon dioxide emissions which put it in the free vehicle tax bracket and costing just 765 pounds in fuel to drive for the year (assuming you meet the average of 12,000 miles over the full year, that works out at just 14 pounds per week), the Coupe CDI Pure might not be the most aesthetically pleasing car on the market (or even the best looking currently in Smart dealers), but if you're looking to buy the most economical car that's currently available, it's without doubt your best choice - and it's more spacious than you think.
