The Top 5 Wines In 2009 For You To Try In 2010!
If like many people, you are one who enjoys a single brand or varietal of wine
, you are denying yourself the joys of what the wine world has to offer. Monogamy is great for relationships but there are too many great wines on the market to stay true to only one. Let one of your New Year's resolutions include trying a few new wines.
So what's better to get you more excited about trying some different wines in the New Year than listing my favourite top 5 wines in 2009 which will still be great in 2010, don't be put off by the names.
1. Chateau Plince Pomerol. This really is a beautiful wine. Definite blackberry, licorice, tea and oak, with a little touch of earth and leather. It's a complex wine that's incredibly well balanced, with just the right acidity and tannins to make it feel vibrant and alive through the strong finish. Amazingly velvety and textured for a 2005; particularly since it was just released in early March. No doubt this will get better with age, but certainly a great wine now. I can only imagine what it would taste like if decanted for an hour or so before drinking.
2. Gruet Demi Sec. Methode Champenoise comes to the American West in a sparkling wine that's perfect for ringing in the New Year. Fruity aromas and fresh effervescence power this light 'bodied', semi dry sparkling wine. The palate possesses a creamy sensation and flavours of green apples, ripe pears, pineapple and a hint of mineral. It is light and elegant with good acidity and exotic fruit flavours.
3. Vina Robles 2006 Red4. This blend from Paso Robles draws its structure from Petite Sirah and shows spice and cherry qualities of Syrah. Traces of Touriga and Tannat grapes add scents of violet. This young wine is fresh and fruity with blackberry and ripe cherry. Thirteen months in mostly French Oak adds roundness.
4. 2004 Fattoria Poggiopiano Rosso Di Sera. This was a beautiful Tuscan wine. Extremely well balanced, with dark berries, coffee and hint of maple syrup and rich spice, this is one of the best wines I tasted yet in Italy. If I let my wine sit for a few minutes, it became better balanced, gentler and more silky. Once I swirled it, it became hot, tannic and angry. This can happen with most wines, but the transformation was much more pronounced on this wine than I've seen in others.
5. Adelsheim Caitlin's Reserve Chardonnay. From a pioneering Oregon winery known for its sexy Pinot Noir comes this Chardonnay that shows layers of figs, pears, apricots, apples, nutmeats and minerals. The French oak in which it ages is subtle; the wine's lushness is tempered by bright acidity.
