The Top Highlights on a Bolivian Vacation

Copacabana / Isla Del Sol

Situated at just under 4,000m above sea level the small town of Copacabana is a wonderful place to relax. Situated on the shores of the massive Lake Titicaca (which you could easily mistake for an ocean, due to its size) a peaceful pueblo with all the handicrafts under the sun and an array of fresh trout this place is a great way to begin your Bolivian adventure.Most people find that 1 to 2 days is ample time spent in Copacabana, the general trend after this is to hop on a boat and head for Isla Del Sol (Island of the Sun) the largest of all the lakes islands. The best idea to take in the entire beauty of this Island is to take the boat to the north end of the island to the town of Challapampa and then walk from the north to the south of the island (around 3 hours) to Yumani, the largest town on the island. There are plenty of accommodation options in the south with some boasting fantastic views of Lake Titicaca.

La Paz

Although a big dirty city La Paz has a certain "something" that is most definitely worth the stop-over. Set inside a river canyon (which can appear as if you are trapped inside a large pot) this bustling city is quite an impressive site to view on arrival. As you stroll through the streets you will discover some eye opening attractions such as a witches market selling lama fetuses and dried frogs through to an informative coca and cocaine museum. Be prepared to be left a little short of breath as you wander around the sites, a good 3,630m above sea level. The steep narrow streets entering all types of alleyways will leave you breathless.

Uyuni

What appears to be a big white blanket of never-ending snow is actually the world's largest salt flat known as the "Salar de Uyuni" covering a surface of over 10 000 Km2. A train and/or bus ride away from La Paz this salt flat is something of extraordinary beauty. A day tour is one way to enjoy the stunning scenery which can easily be booked as part of a customized package tour.

Sucre

Named a world heritage site by UNESCO, Sucre is set among hills with whitewashed houses and friendly locals. Sucre is the official constitutional capital of Bolivia and a charming city. Everything is within walking distance and strolling through the colonial streets there are a wide range of museums to visit, along with a host of churches and ample opportunity to stop and take in the beauty in one of the many parks and plazas around.

Potosi

This city is situated an impressive 4,090m above sea level making it the highest city in the world. One of the main attractions here is the mine of Cerro Rico (rich hill) once known as the worlds largest silver mine. The city of Potosi like Sucre was named a UNESCO world heritage site for its rich history and abundance of colonial architecture.Mine tours are available and whilst not exactly every travelers idea of fun, a visit underground most certainly gives you an appreciation of what these workers do. If you are not particularly interested in a visit to the mine other attractions in and around Potosi include; a visit to the Casa Nacional de la Moneda (National Mint), museum and convent of San Francisco, the main cathedral and the tower (where you can get a great view of Potosi from its summit).

In addition to the above destinations there are a number of other locations that are well worth a visit and can be combined with those above by any good tour operator. These may include the Amazon Rainforest, the beautiful Yungas region, the pre-Inca site of Tiahuanaco and trekking in the high Andes among others.
