The Truth About Dentures

There are a lot of misconceptions about dentures

. Many consumers do not realize how fully beneficial a set of dentures can be for an ailing mouth. Dentures can be quite comfortable and effective, but consumers need to know how to use them and care for them in order to get the most out of their set of dentures.

Why Are Dentures Needed?

Dentures are often associated with older people, and this association has a logical explanation. Older generations were not given the education that they needed regarding good dental hygiene. As such, many older people have lost their teeth due to cavities and tooth decay. When you lose most of your teeth, your ability to chew and digest food can be greatly effected. In order to get your chewing ability back, your dentist may recommend that you consider dentures. Dentures are a full set of artificial teeth that fit over your gums. With dentures, you can have a winning smile and a fully functional set of teeth, even if most of your other teeth have rotted away or been pulled out by a dentist.

Dentures or Veneers?

Many people are confused about the difference between dentures and veneers. While denture and veneers are both types of false teeth, they are quite different. Veneers are specially formulated teeth caps that fit over your current teeth. When you have veneers implanted into your mouth, your tooth is usually filed down to a small point, and the veneer is fitted over that tooth. The veneer is permanently secured in your mouth and cannot be removed. Dentures, on the other hand, are not fitted over any teeth. Dentures are usually provided to consumers who have lost all of their teeth. Dentures are removable. In fact, they must be removed every night for safety reasons. Dentures are adhered to the surface of the gums using paste or adhesive tape.

Using Dentures

If you have dentures, there are two basic things you need to know about. They are proper denture use and proper denture care. If you fail to pay attention to these two basic guidelines, you may cause an injury or some other type of discomfort with your dentures. First, you need to learn how to use your dentures correctly. Your dentures fit over your gums and are not held in place by any wires or screws, so you need to know how to secure the dentures to your mouth.

Many consumers use either adhesive pads or adhesive paste to get their dentures to stick in their mouth. Adhesive pads are often less messy than paste, but they may not provide the same level of adhesiveness as a thick paste will provide. This decision often comes down to the consumer's preference. The most important thing to remember when you have dentures is proper denture hygiene and care. Every night, you should brush your dentures carefully to remove any food particles that may have accumulated between your false teeth. Then, you should soak your dentures in an effervescent bath to remove surface stains and odors. You can find effervescent tablets at your local drugstore,. This will clean your dentures and give them a fresh, minty feeling when you put them in in the morning.
