The Truth About Living Rooms

There are several factors in deciding how to decorate your home

. There should be balance between practicality and aesthetics. A cramped apartment for instance, can't be decorated with an extravagant interior for the obvious lack of space. Decorating is not just how your decors and furnishings look, but also how they suit your place.

An important factor is to make your home a reflection of your personality and style. Regardless of your chosen theme, your own interpretation of the design is essential to make your home truly your own.

Are you laidback or a go-getter? Do you go crazy over pastel colors or the bolder hues? Do you love knick-knacks or actually prefer minimal furnishings? What makes decorating more fun and meaningful, is the opportunity to show your interests and personality with other than the usual poetry writing, arts or talking. This time, home decors rule!

One case we just have to discuss is decorating the living room. Why should we focus on this room? It's because the living room is a main part of the house, a place where guests are received and entertained. A space that creates an impression. and for many families, a space where they spend most of their time. It is therefore crucial to make this room as inviting, attractive and comfortable as possible.

One look a living room can have is the formal interiors, where you can put your most prized possessions on display, including a genuine handmade Persian rug, oil paintings, china or antiques and other valuable items. The color is usually dark or rich, and the furniture made of expensive material like hardwood. The fabrics range from the sophisticated velvet to fine lace and embroidery. A formal living room makes for an ideal receiving area for guests, especially for those house parties you love hosting.

Lifestyle changes over the past decades have given interior designers the freedom to transform living rooms into a comfortable gathering space that serves many purposes. For family members, it's the place where they watch TV, read, do homework or just hang out.

There are more colors particularly of brighter shades, knick-knacks and personalized items.

Furniture in a more casual "family style" style living room should be coordinated, but can be much less structured than in a formal setting. Many choices for upholstery fabrics, window treatments and area rugs will be decided by practicality. After all, a few encounters with a horde of teen-age athletic shoes probably wouldn't do Aunt Matilda's prized Chinese silk area rug much good, whereas sturdy wool, sisal or jute rug could take the punishment and ask for more.

To add to the evolution of living rooms, technology is also welcome in this receiving space. We often see a television set or entertainment area and even a computer with the kids' game paraphernalia.

It's not really about the contents of the living room. It's more about the ambiance that you create. As long as your living room is comfortable, inviting and one that shows your personality, you can be keeping an elephant in there and nobody would really care.
