The Truth About Tap Water

Did you know that there are separate local agencies which are responsible for supplying and treating the local tap water

? The source, and standards for each agency can be very different. However, don't worry over 90% of the systems pass the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) standards for tap water quality.

That being said, there are other problems with tap water. The Environmental Working Group found about 260 contaminants, in 42 states, from testing public water supplies. Among the contaminants were 141 chemicals which currently have no safety standards, or no method for eliminating the contaminants from the water supply. The Environmental Working Group is blaming the EPA for the oversight.

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) insists that healthy people who consume only small amounts of these contaminants will be fine. However, large quantities should be avoided.

But the NRDC warned that pregnant women, young children, the elderly, people with chronic illnesses and those with weakened immune systems may be susceptible to these contaminants. To be on the safe side, get a copy of your cities annual water quality report and discuss this with your physician.

Normally, your water provider should notify you by newspaper, mail, radio, TV, or hand-delivery if your water fails to meet EPA or state standards or in the event of a waterborne disease emergency. The notice will tell you about any precautions you should follow like boiling your water.

There are a few simple treatments to ensure disease-free drinking. Bringing water to a roaring boil for at least a minute will ensure you kill the diseases. Also, adding a disinfectant like household bleach or iodine will work in times of scarce water. By far the easiest is using a water filter. Water filters will ensure clean fresh tasting tap water.
