The Truth About Vaginal Yeast Infection
What is Vaginal Yeast Infection?
What is Vaginal Yeast Infection?
It's an infection caused by the Candida fungus over-growing in the vagina. This fungus can exist there normally but does not usually overgrow into an infection because the body's beneficial bacteria keeps it under control.
But when it does overgrow it causes the symptoms of vaginal yeast infection which are typically; redness, inflammation, swelling, itching, burning when urinating, and painful sex.
It is very common with around 75% of women having at least one infection during their lifetime. And of these something like 50% will have more than one.
How is a Vaginal Yeast Infection Treated?
Before attempting any treatment you should get diagnosed by your doctor to prove that you do have a yeast infection and not an STD that can have similar symptoms. You doctor will then advise the appropriate treatment.
This is usually prescribed or over-the-counter drug-based medications in the form of creams, pessaries, sprays, ointments, tablets, etc. These can be very effective in getting rid of the aggravating symptoms.
How Can I Prevent Recurring Yeast Infections?
This is a very important question because recurring infections can seriously damage your health apart from being obstructive to your everyday life.
The simple answer is that you have to reduce the overall risk by making some adjustments, wherever possible, to your lifestyle and diet, taking into consideration the underlying factors that can trigger the Candida fungal overgrowth...
First off, the Candida fungus feeds and grows on sugar so you have to avoid all sugar and sugar products. Get rid of sugar from your diet.
Broad spectrum antibiotics kill both the bad bacteria and your good bacteria. So talk to your doctor about alternatives if you are on them.
Hormonal imbalance helps to trigger candida overgrowth so have your doctor check your levels. And things like menstruation, pregnancy and HRT put you at a higher risk of yeast infections.
The vaginal area is normally acidic and anything that upsets this can trigger an overgrowth. So avoid feminine hygiene products sprays and douches. And avoid unprotected sex.
The fungus, like any yeast, also loves warm, dark, moist conditions. So avoid sitting around in damp, sweaty or wet training pants or swim wear. As soon as you are finished, get showered and dried, then change into dry clothes.
And don't wear tight-fitting underwear either for much the same reason as above. Wear cotton underwear because this allows the vaginal area to breathe and so stay drier.
Vaginal yeast infections can be hard to eradicate but with your doctor's help and commitment on your part you can prevent recurring infections from blighting your life.
